this is my memory of the rock scene as well. Real metal fans didn't really care for him because he was too commercial while people who were listening to classic rock and softer genres thought he was to "hard for their taste". Marilyn was to metal and rock what Avril Lavigne was to punk.

Skinny Puppy are noteworthy for using guitar samples much more than other electro-industrial artists. They pioneered industrial rock in a sense and many industrial rock groups took pointers from them. Also, nu metal has industrial influences, particularly from early industrial metal like Godflesh
