i disagree. korn is just as good. thats your own personal bias tbqh
they changed their sound. their more recent stuff isn't nu-metal.
they were good songwriters and every album sounded differently
Korn tho
Appealing to proto-hipsters.
Chino is NOT a metal guy and incorporates 80s alternative music into the music which is why they have cred with people. Jonathan Davis is also a non metal guy but his influences dont show up as much in Korn's music which is why he has far less cred.
>Your own opinion is your own bias
Wow, big brain take, user.
>Appealing to proto-hipsters 50 years after the birth of hipsters
Wow, user, very intriguing!
They were never campy sounding like the others they just sounded like a legit rock band with good song writing and memorable riffs that didn't rely on gimmicks
Korn are still popular and their new album is actually kinda sorta okay.
Papa Roach are still popular for some reason.
Linkin Park would still be popular but well
deftones was never "nu-metal" they were "alternative rock/metal" at the very most. That's why they've made consistently great music for over two decades. They NEVER conformed to what other bands were doing. They did what THEY wanted to do, and other bands happened to jump all on their jock strap.
I'd imagine they only got hit with nu-metal because of all the screaming on the first 3 albums. White Pony is the only one that feels like an actual nu-metal record and it's damn good.
they are more like one of the last 90s alternative rock bands than a numetal band
In that way they resemble Queens of the Stone Age more than numetal bands
I think the influences of Davis show up in different ways on different albums....but a lot in his vocal melodies. I also think Moreno leans more toward a sort of "hipster" angle while Jonathan is more "goth", and thus they appeal more to some of those kinds of people.
I dunno man, their early stuff is definitely heavy than any alt rock in the same way Korn is, neither are traditional metal but definitely metallic.
I mean youtube.com
To me, this is what comes to my mind when I even think of "nu metal" along with early Korn stuff. It's like exactly what the style is to me.
I never saw them as numetal because of the lack of rap singing. At most they would have been closer to At the Drive In than Korn, to mention some late 90s bands.
Slipknot and Disturbed don't rap either but they're considered nu-metal. You can hear the hip hop influences in the instrumental tracks, at least on their early stuff.
Deftones are just weird cause they only sprinkled in a little bit of hiphop in some songs, like in Root. I'm pretty sure they're only considered numetal because of era of bands they were forming in. Alternative metal is prob a better label for their greater discog
Deftones are cringey garbage that take themselves way too seriously. Deftones is only enjoyed by psueds and teenagers
this
nobody forget, they were the first alternative/metal band to use 7 and 8 string guitars on songs with pop style choruses. Yeah, they were heavy, but they were city pop style tunes at the end of the day.
Based retard
I'm pretty sure Korn was using 7 strings first. Stephen was still on a six string on white pony which came out in 2000.
yeah i agree deftones sucks but chino's side project he did 'team sleep' is literally god tier
Deftones are one of the best live shows i've ever seen, and i've seen hundreds. They sound BETTER than the studio version.
Opinion isnt bias, but it can affect how you percieve the bands impact and scale. Longevity is a matter of numbers, which your perception of can be skewed
