Real talk. What went wrong?
Personally I felt the songs were too damn long with each over 10 minutes.
Aenima shows that the ideal tool song is 6-8 minutes.

absolutely nothing, it's better than lateralus and almost as good as 10,000 days
It's their best album.
tempest was pretty weak but other than that it's great.
real talk.
nothing except how long it took
lets hope they have a crop of unfinished songs/fragments left over they can finish for an album sooner than expected.
im suprised how short the songs feel. ive lsitened to the songs and started them over right at the end and played them again and it only felt like 7 minutes or so. wtf. i really love this album a massive amount though, im sure if i didnt like the music here they'd feel really long... intredasting
It's just too tired and familiar sounding for me
Only 6 real songs with 4 throwaways. None of the 6 were bad, but nothing really stood out either.
Lame opinion. Tempest is the only song that actually uses it's length to it's advantage. Every other track could lose 3-5 minutes and nothing essential would be lost. Tempest manages to stay interesting throughout without constant repetition of that same idea ad nauseam.
I have yet to fully digest it but it's pretty good. Nothing seems to have gone wrong.
Lame opinion. It didn't need to be that long, it wasn't very interesting, it started on one level and didn't have anywhere to go. The lyrics were cringe, guitar sounds were thin, the performance was weaker than the aggression that was trying to be conveyed, it really shone a light on just how old they are. Probably their worst song.
Funny thing is everything you said could be applied to every song except Tempest and maybe the title track.
>everything you said could be applied to every song except Tempest
that's where your wrong bucko
>t started on one level and didn't have anywhere to go
m8, it's the only song that actually sent somewhere. Listen to Pneuma, Invincible and Descending which repeat the same thing for 6 minutes, go into needless synth/guitar solo sections which are boring as hell and then come back for one more chorus. So damn boring and could have been cut by 5 minutes. Tempest actually introduces new sections/musical ideas throughout the track.
It's pleb filter, they gave fans the opposite of what they wanted
>shitty music is the ultimate pleb filter
BASED
t. filtered
>Tempest actually introduces new sections/musical ideas throughout the track
that's not inherently a good thing, and they're all still just heavy rock riffs without the grit and bite they should have, the feeling never changes, it never opens up or shuts down, it's trying to be a consistent onslaught of crushing aggression for 15 straight minutes, but it's too clean to pull it off, it should have the tone of Cold And Ugly or something, if your gonna get dirty, get dirty.
>repeat the same thing for 6 minutes
it's variations on a theme, like they've always done well, it's why they strike an emotional chord with people to a much greater degree than other "proggy" bands that just jump from idea to idea randomly.
>needless synth/guitar solo sections which are boring as hell
oof
>if your gonna get dirty, get dirty
no wonder people hate tool fans
So basically you'd rather one dull idea be repeated ad nauseam than have multiple good ideas be expanded upon because Adam Jones didn't use enough "grit and bite" for your liking? I can appreciate you being particular and critical of production and guitar tones but to take it to that extreme is kind of autistic. It's not so bad that it ruins the song. Sounds like you're just having a hard time explaining why you don't like the albums token heavy song. Granted, I prefer Tool when they're being more open/meditative/experimental rather than in your face and heavy. It's just a shame that on this album all of the other songs were structured rather poorly. Keep in mind I'm not saying Tempest is the best song on the album, but that it's the only one that utilizes it's length well. IMO Fear Inoculum is probably the strongest track as a whole.
pneuma is the only decent song on the whole damn album, and it's too long anyway.
hallucinating fanboys
Can we all agree Culling Voices is Tool's worst, or at least laziest song?
James Rolfe likes the album
>dull
they're not dull
>ad nauseam
none of their ideas are repeated ad nauseum, they're developed slowly over the course of the song
>multiple good ideas
too many different ideas can fuck up a song, it can lose it's character and become just a collage of directionless riffs, but I don't have that criticism for tempest, it has character, it has consistency, the ideas asren't different to the point of it feeling like it's coming out of left feild or anything, they sound like they belong together, but it's obvious tempest is suppose to be some sort of monolithic 'aggressive' epic, but it fails at it because i think the length allows for it to stagnate since the feel is consistent throughout even though the riffs may change, there wasn't enough contrast dynamically or mood-wise like they usually do to break it up and enhance the power when it does hit, the guitars aren't as big or dirty sounding to match the concept it's going for, the lyrics are awkward sounding. It's just ok, it's not as good as it could have been.
Fuck no.
It's an APC song in a Tool album. Wouldn't call it their worst overall though, but it is the worst real song on the album.
descending pneuma, the end of culling voices, fear innoculum are all decent, descending and pnuema are top tier the rest are just ok but the production is really good
Tool is boring
Tool was always boring
You just didn'tknow it cause you hadn't heard anyone else execute long heavy songs better than they do cause nobody else that does it broke through onto radio and mtv back in the day
There's no reason to listen to Tool when you're aware of say, Swans or Jesu
Tool is boring
Tool was always boring
Stop listening to Tool
Stop being boring
>SOUND THE DREAD ALARM
Jesus christ.
Descending is one of the few songs where I actually feel like the crescendo is appropriately satisfying. FI is Blue Balls: The Album.
>Particular pieces of music are not allowed to unexpectedly resonate with you as long as a vocal majority doesn't share your experience
Well, then in that case I hate it lel
Too self-indulgent and Maynard’s performance is, overall, weak.
Descending is fucking amazing though and the SOUND THE DREAD ALARM part is one of the best things Tool has ever done.
There is no diversity, every song sounds the same except for Tempest. Maynard sounds like a mouse. Vocals and the instrumentals do not work well together as they did previously. Guitar shuffles out the same off-beat notes without any surprises. Bass is nowhere near as apparent and unique sounding as it used to be. Drums are trying the hold the whole thing together but you can only get so far by yourself. There is no proper pacing to the album. Invincible is by far the worst song and disrupts the atmosphere right when you're deep into it and like almost every other song it feels unnaturally long. Descending is a fantastic a closing track but it's in the middle of the album and suffers from following Invincible, while Tempest comes right after CCT but completely neutralizes the upbeat feeling with its meandering intro. Songs like FI, Pneuma and Culling Voices are pretty good, but they need some different stuff in between to prevent it from feeling like listening to the same song on repeat for half an hour.
Overall it's underthought, underdeveloped. It feels like they let out the idea of a new album too early and then rushed to finish it before some artificial deadline.
That's my boy.
tfw I will see in my lifetime all the fans of the meme band that is swans seethe when they die
Gira's pretty fucking old and the first single off the new one seems to be about directly confronting ones own mortality so yeah, ded soon.
RISE
Adams riffs are uninspired as fuck. Justin and Danny sound great as usual though.
Meanwhile, Swans can have 30 minutes of the same goddamn thing repeated over and over, and it's looked at as genius.
I like both
Lyricism is absolutely on point. Invincible is particularly remarkable. I think that modulo the time gap from their last album this would be considered a much greater work
the lyrics are the absolute weakest part of the album, which is an insane thing to have to say about tool.
fpbp
I think it depends on your current political views. Invincible is clearly an anti-reactionary tract that it's hard to separate its structure from the message. If you don't think that's a good idea then it sort of fades away
Pneuma, Descending and Culling Voices have pretty nice lyricism, others are absolute trash.
>Pneuma, Descending and Culling Voices have pretty nice lyricism, others are absolute trash.
Trash compared to what? I think this is still the peak of the genre (whatever you think Tool is).
If you ask me if I think, "Hey is tool keeping it compared to Parabol/Parabola?" then no. But that's a huge barrier. Their new stuff still slaps
>I think this is still the peak of the genre (whatever you think Tool is).
Tool are at the bottom of progressive metal, progressive rock, alternative metal, post-metal, and whatever else they could possibly sound like
>There's no reason to listen to Tool when you're aware of say, Swans or Jesu
Your post fell apart here
I like it.
>Trash compared to what?
Compared to one another, as in, say, Invincible compared to Descending, or Fear Inoculum compared to Pneuma, or Tempest compared to Culling Voices. Maynard can be very subtle with his lyrics when he really tries, with some of these songs, it feels like he didn't even give a shit.
Maybe, but Tool is still fuckin' boring
ITT
>ADHD patients are upset they don't have a chorus to bop their head to
That's how you spot people who don't actually listen to music.
Fantastic instrumentation, Maynard dropped the ball and the lyrics sound like he's imitating himself from his prime.
Nigga needs to stop picking grapes and drop some fucking acid like the good ole days. As much as he wants to think he can derive inspiration from everyday bullshit as well as he did ego-splitting psychedelic experiences, he's incorrect, because that's not the nature of his material.
He indulged in a manner of lyricism defined by explorations into human nature and he's not willing to revert to normie retard lyrics with surface level pleasure nor willing to "spiral out" and "keep going."
The result is an awkward in between.
I changed tracklisting, I think it improved the overall flow of the album.
1- FI
2- Pneuma
3- Litany Against Fear
4- Tempest
5- Culling Voices
6- CCT
7- Legion Inoculant
8- Invincible
9- Descending
10- Mockingbeat
FI and Pneuma serve as introduction as before. Tempest kicks off earlier, keeping the pace going and Culling Voices is the central piece as the heart of the album. Descending is so much better as a closer and Invincible fits better as the penultimate song. I'm not sure of the ambient tracks, switch them up according to your taste I guess.
>the "you, just, like, don't, like, understand, man" defense
must be why people who have been listening to them since the 90's think this album in particular sucks dogshit through a silly straw
I like Descending and Invincible a lot. I feel the pacing on both is lovely. Good build, theyre exciting, solid emotional drive, blah blah blah theyre fucking awesome.
Culling voices is probably the best vocal selivery on the album
Pneuma and the titular track aren't inherently bad, but they overstay their welcome in a way that fucks with the pacing/delivery/emotion. If they'd peppered in one more chorus with a key change into the opener or removed one chrous entirely from Pneuma, they might be better songs. I just feel like they lost their way if that makes any sense. Like if you've ever jammed and y'all are having too much fun and none of you want to end it, so you end up killing it? That kind of happens. Start promising, die in mediocritiy.
I have no qualms with 7empest other than I wish it bit harder somehow. I am not a strings player, I feel like the riffs themselves fuck hard but theres something about the sound that doesnt have you biting your bottom lip like any other funky+aggressive riffslinging nonsense would.
CC Trip is gnarly. Dude pushing 60 showing off. It doesnt fit on an album that otherwise has a cohesive "vibe" but the man's an animal.
>"it's shit because it's shit and you are stupid and retarded"
Didn't expect any less from 4channel.
You hate him because he's right lol
>"it's good because it's good because you, just, like, don't, like, get it, man"
Didn't expect any less from someone who is clearly AN INTELLECTUAL POWERHOUSE
in an interview over 10 years ago, they mentioned hw they dont play alot of songs live because they arent the aggressive, angry young men they were. so they dont even attempt it or feel that anymore and it;d be a mockery to try and pull them off, i remember that really stuck out to me when i read it because i had tickets to see them and was hoping theyd maybe throw jerk off in or something.
i have alot of respect for them for saying/doing that honestly. it shows they arnet phoning anything in and play what they feel, which is all anyone could hope for with emotonal musics such as tool. so it actually suprises me how heavy this album is, ii ws epecting before this album came out, a bunch of intenson and disposition kind of stuff, and i wasnt really wrong, theres no screaming and they arent busting out the intense climaxes they used to on the oler albums, it's alot more hypnotic and longer relaxed pats to the music. im blown away y how much like this album, they still have it, ut's just toned down and different in a lot of ways, and not quite what made tool tool, but still completely tool, and that is great in my opinion, this is an honest, heart felt album. i understand anyone who doesnt like it or old school tool fans who dont like it, sure, but it scratched the itch, exceeded my expectations and has been stuck in my head for days. it took me a couple years for 10k days to really click with me, and i already put this up there with that album. fucking crazy a bunch of almost senior citizens pumped this out, especially after such a long hiatus and not hanging out with each other for a decade. and crazy a band can be this consistant after releasing their masterpieces (lateralus/aenima). tool is one of the best bands to ever exist (imo).
now it's time to wake up and drink some coffee with undertow.
SO GOOD TO SEE YOU
I MISSED YOU SO MUCH
is it just me, or is that shit fucking... POWERFUL
third eye is a 10/10. cant think of any music quite like it.
and now compare third eye or even lateralus or parabola to anything on this new album
maynard's voice is non-existent , there is no harmony with instruments
remember the part from parabola " in this hooooooly reality " while guitar is weeping in the background, that was the fucking Tool i know
hey fantano
This Band is a piece of shit
Whoever listens to it is a total faggot nigger.
take it easy ms swift, we can't all be winners all the time
All the songs sound the same and are unimaginative. No screams. Feels uninspired.
>Aenima shows that the ideal tool song is 6-8 minutes.
Fucking finally someone said it. Descending and FI were the only songs on the album that justified their length. Pneuma is too long and overrated in general. Invincible would be 10/10 without the stupid 1:30 long D chugging
Back off tony
It's like the new Tarantula movie, lots of noodling around and nothing happens.
#FearInoculum
another thread which shows that toolfags are the worst.
tool released an album of average quality which is bad for their standards, get over your lives geez
But it has been 13 years!!
I waited 13 years, oh no this can't be happening
it's good fuck you ahhhh
I waited a long time , asnaiosdoiajd
the album sounds like a failed project that they shelved between lateralus and 10,000
I like the new album. Am I a plebeian?
Anyone else prefer the live version of Descending they've been doing to the album version? Like, why overcomplicate this masterpiece?
It's a fine album. And it's different too. All long ass songs, sure they're known for those but their previous albums had shorter, more concise tracks. The only thing I didn't like too much was the production. And I can swear that some of the guitar lines were literally recycled from previous albums.
They made all the songs long ass fuck to capitalize on the Spotify plays
i never got into tool seems like gay music, no offense but how many female fans do they even have? when they toured here in melbourne it was a sausage fest.
Women are too dumb to understand Tool
I hear H. in the title track, and Schism in Pneuma. At first i thought these were lazy re-hashes, but i wonder if these references were done on purpose. Considering Schism was about separation and breakdown of a relationship, but Pneuma is about reorganizing and coming back together, maybe they are indeed thematically linked. 3deep5me m8
I think they are trying to narrate with the instrumental progression of the chugging in invincible. After the chorus they always chug and the chugging slows down each chorus until it is crawling towards the end, like a man slowing down as he ages. Then the end progressively speeds back up over the Ponce de Leon verses. It is repetitive but I think it fits the song nicely.
There is an intro bass line in one of the songs that is literally a shorter version of a guitar riff that can be heard in Wings for Marie Pt 2.
Wtf, why is that bald wine maker punching Taylor Swift?
Pretty much. There’s really no justification for all the build-up they do.
There’s no real exploration of timbre and atmosphere from the guitars either. The guitars sound very by-the-numbers both compositionally and tonally
>swans
worst band. this meme should die.
>daney carey hit drums
>he hit tabla
>he hit realy fast
>he hit more when jones drone
>he do long solo over synth
>he also kick doubble
>daney has more toms then jones notes in penta scale
>maynerd sing
>maynerd not scream
>maynerd not like pottery
>maynrd like apc
>justin play bass
Nothing went wrong it's a good album they just didn't make radio friendly songs for plebs.
this
I wouldn't say it's as good as either of those albums but you're right, nothing went wrong with the album. It's brilliant.
