Major record labels hadn't yet realized that planting all these dumbass coked out soundcloud mumble rappers wasn't the secret to dominating the music industry. Therefore, rap and R&B was in a much less saturated, more experimental phase. Death grips, ASAP Rocky, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Danny Brown etc all released some of their first truly successful material in 2011.
