If you like heavier math music, check out Botch from Tacoma, WA. Dudes came out in the mid/late 90s. They're considered the godfathers of all mathcore. After the band broke up, members moved to the mid West and started influential mathcore bands like These Arms Are Snakes

Emo is like Shoegaze. When it entered the music scene it was completely revolutionary. But eventually became intensely derivative. Increasingly Emo became a repetition of tropes, cliches, etc. Some of the more underground was aesthetically enjoyable in the sense of it's ability to replicate precisely this sound. Yet what was missing was the emotional investment, the pain.
What made Emo great was how innovative it was as a genre, how groundbreaking it was, that it shocked music, that it upturned everything we know about rock, punk, etc.
In this sense there are only a few really truly great Emo albums, just like shoegaze.
Personally, I'm always looking for a band that can give me the same, or an even deeper feeling, than William Bonny, or the Hotelier, or American Football, the classics, gave me upon my first listen. But truly, nobody is breaking real ground anymore.
If anybody knows any music that really hits you deep, that brings a new sense of creativity, of emotion, into the picture, let me know, because I have dug tirelessly through the most obscure bands, and nothing gives me that real sense of true emotion
I think the brave little abacus manages to do it. I guess you have already listened to them, bit if not I think they are what you are looking for.
Joan of Arc - A Portable Model Of is arguably as good as/better than Americ Anfootball
