not one with a 3d hardware interface that will automatically do splits and slices that runs off a couple of aaa batteries and also i like it to be separate , one that i can be taking a sample and creating ideas with zero friciton. point being, you can do everything on your computer, it literally can be programmed to make any sound, doesn't mean you should or the interface is conducive to creativity. the whole point of buying a separate synth for me is the interface and aesthetic. which imo teenage engineering do well. though i'm not sure i would buy their expensive stuff like OP. i don't understand why the OP1 is so expensive but maybe i would if I tried one out (probably just the interface makes it fun).

I have a deepmind as well and I'm actually quite impressed with the build quality of that thing. The ms-101 is not as great since it's plastic like the original was, but still decent for the price. So far so good.

It depends what kind of sounds you want, I recently got a korg ms-20 and I love it. When you limit yourself to an instrument or two, it expands your creativity and will help you cultivate a sound signature, vs wading through countless shitty presets in omnisphere ect

You can add external modules to anything with the appropriate connectivity including semimodular synths. Semimodular just means it has internal signal routing that can be rewired via patch cables or some sort of mod matrix.

400 is a terrible entry to modular, it's just not worth it. It's made of shitty bits of flimsy metal that you have to put together yourself, it doesn't do anything interesting or special, and the sequencer is shit.

IMO the best entry to modular is a Minibrute 2S. You get out/inputs for everything in the patchbay so it has all the modular connectivity that the 400 has, but it does a lot more overall with interesting mods for the oscillators and the distortion and stuff. Plus it's way better quality, and the sequencer is much better to use and far more powerful than the one you get on the 400.

Functionally it's no different than a PO-400, the PO-400 doesn't give you anything else actually useful for modular like an 12v power supply or space for other modules, it's basically just a semi modular synth but setup in a dumber way.

The real best entry to modular is DIYing everything, but since you're seriously considering buying a PO-400 I assumed that you would be too retarded for that.

The te is fully modular synth, there is no normalization and you have to make a patch to route the signals

Yeah I know all that, what I'm saying is that it doesn't actually count for anything. You're chasing "modular" as a definition rather than as a concept.

The whole endgame of modular is to build your own unique synth with whatever weird modules appeal to you. To get into it, you need to focus on getting the infrastructure together to support that. What this means is you need power, a case, a controller, and basic things like oscillators and envelopes so that you can actually use your first few modules.

Both the PO-400 and the 2S give you sequencing and basics leaving you to figure out power and a case on your own. The only difference is that the 2S gives you much better versions of those things packaged in a much nicer synth. The fact that it also has some internal signal routing means absolutely nothing apart from that it's a more useable instrument.

If you just want a modular to say that you have a modular then honestly just don't bother.

The people using these kinds of setups aren't making good music. Never. It's not that the setups are bad, it's that the people using them are bad at music. But that's why they have them for the most part it seems, they want the clout of being some kind of "genius scientist in a laboratory" but they could never achieve that perception with their music so they go for the appearance rather than the actuality. It's a facade in other words. Most of these people certainty couldn't sit down at a piano and write a song but they can patch random cables and turn knobs until some bleep blarp pattern resembling music materializes eventuality.

In the past there were real musicians who used modular synths to make music. It seems like the modern modular crowd thought they could skip over the whole "music" aspect of using modular synths and go straight to musical results without the foundations in music needed to make it work.

They made the mistake of thinking they could sidestep the proverbial 10,000 hours and purchase musicality/creativity in a box when this couldn't be farther from the truth. The results speak for themselves.
