It sucks ass and has that dumb twang accent in all of it
People joke about it but it's actually true, it's a bad genre. It's the same thing with Punk, although that genre doesn't get as much ridicule.
You don't like Johnny Cash?
punk and outlaw country are both good
Why don't you think it's good? What doesn't work about it?
which album(s) do i start with for merle haggard?
I like country, but there is so little of it that is good.
Like yeah I could listen to hank williams but even with him it starts to get boring after awhile since every song starts to sound the same.
There need to be more bands like Freakwater and then country would be more worth listening to.

Album that has the song I just posted is a 10/10 country album and what the genre should be about imo
The genre never developed into anything worthwhile. Country music all sounds the same, and even when someone attempts to integrate elements from other genres into it (which is rare), it doesn't improve the music at all.
classic country is kinda annoying cause most of the albums are filler, but there's always those 1-2 non-singles that are really really good. they also released like 2 albums per year in the 60s/70s
start with a compilation, then listen to the albums from the songs you like the most
i'll check this album out some time, thanks
This is a great point. Probably one of the only genres where comp albums are not only appropriate but necessary.
they're necessary for blues, traditional pop/swing, and most 50's rock n' roll too
there is a clear difference between sounds like honky-tonk, outlaw country, nashville sound, and bluegrass
youtube.com
But I do
Just a product of the times I guess? When the market was less saturated and there was really just a need for content to put on the radio?
yeah, albums didn't really start to be looked at as an art form in it of themselves until the 60's. similarly, there wasn't as many singer-songwriters, which is why covers are so popular with traditional artists like elvis and frank sinatra.
boy, we're talking about real country here. not this gay crap.
Because they suck. Trash responses from people who literally never even tried listening to anything that wasnt top 10 nashville pop. Im gonna be generous and include western, folk and bluegrass with country but heres a sampling of some great current artists

Early summer is a great track.
context on that screencap?
this is absolutely my shit right now
wait what the fuck
i thought when said Johnny Paycheck, it was a joke about Johnny Cash's name
i had no idea this guy existed
Not at all. Found out about him thru one of David Berman's interviews right before he killed himself. Berman really appreciated the emotional authenticity that Paycheck showed in his songs, and honestly it opened my eyes.
user, I...
i've been meaning to try one of berman's albums. i've only listened to a couple of his songs.
Purple mountains is a great album if you're at your absolute lowest. No surprise he's gloomy as fuck.
This shit has one foot in the past one foot in the future, makes my dick diamonds
I don't like that slide guitar thing that's in 90% of country songs.

I prefer Western

Why does that tele have modern tuners? Wtf that's in 1980
Because I play in a country band and I usually prefer listening to other stuff in my off time to keep myself from burning out on it.
