>27 >classical composer >10 published compositions with one being premiered this week >went to college for business >finished and got a corporate job >hated it so I quit and got a job teaching private music lessons >20 students >thinking about going back to get a PhD in classical composition >afraid I'll never make much money doing it and become a starving artist loser >wondering if I should go get a tech certificate to learn computer programming instead
I am afraid to invest 4 years sitting in college getting a classical composition degree, I'm afraid I won't be able to feed my future family. I feel like a degree in computer programming would be much safer, but I'm not that interested in tech and really just like classical music.
Are they good then? Could you send a sound clip? We can't help you too much with no reference

He's asking a board full of underage weebs to decide the next 4+ years of his life and inevitable career path. There's almost zero chance this isn't a larp.

if going to school, because of the caliber of the school, will bring you into contact with a broader social network that will have an uplifting possibility - then thats reason to go.
if going to school will be a way for you to fill out your knowledge base (what you cant just do that anyway?) and answer your unanswered questions, then thats another reason to go.
if you are artistically satisfied and can create your own queries and directions, honestly self evaluating here, then perhaps you dont need a degree. phd are most likely doorways into competing for teaching positions/tracks.
i mean, if your writing and getting work out then youve accomplished what most seek, right?
a lot of people just draw a hard line between their art and what makes them their money. give it some thought.
so, perhaps embark on your own self invented journey of getting to the next level, finding new situations and relations that can get you there. do you know what those might be for you?
im just guessin

i mean - perhaps there's some cool new production company that's always putting together dope talent on cool project and you can score some shit for netflix and get on te producers list of who to call for scores. find that group and get to know them.
and meanwhile - get some fucking tech/business gig too.
Bro don't. I did my undergrad in composition and then wasted a year of my life on that medium, preparing for a Master's publishing works, etc. I then realised everyone in contemporary classical music is a fucking retard, went into TV writing and am now making actual money from music and starting to work with top Pop producers in my country. Use your talents for your benefit my man, unless you're a genius whose music the world absolutely fucking needs
