These guys have left practically no musical footprint. I don't know a single band that claims them as an influence. Their sound has not really trickled down into modern rock. What is their legacy? Are they just a relic of the 90s?
These guys have left practically no musical footprint. I don't know a single band that claims them as an influence...
in ten years there are going to be king gizzard inspired bands fucking everywhere
probably best most bands aren't influenced by them. it's hard to achieve that sound without a literal dictator recording overdubs of everyone else's instruments
Mellon Collie is still based though
It's mostly the really fashionable, simple, one-trick pony type of bands that are influential.
SP were too wide ranging in their own influences and sound for one thing to define them and for other people to latch on to and repeat ad nauseam that you could point to and say "that's the smashing pumpkins right there".
Just saw them a couple days ago. Based Billy still has it. The Pumpkins rocked the house, and I was not disappointed.
Silversun Pickups sounds like them. They even have the same name abbreviation of SP
how do i meet a chick like peak d'arcy
It doesn't matter. Their run (well, Billy and Jimmy's run) from Gish to Mellon Collie (including many of their numerous bsides) was outstanding.
Smashing Pumpkins were pastiche in their own time. Which was fine, because it was enjoyable, but it's not surprising that they're not checkpoints for many.
You'd have to have talent to ape Billy.
they had a few hits, that's their legacy. they didnt really have a "sound" to begin with, unless you count corgans annoying croons
Their musical footprint was basically their mega popularity in the alt world from about 1993 to 1998. That was it.
The Pumpkins weren't very distinct, even Billy said Siamese Dream was made off the back of Loveless; the album even had Loveless' fucking recording engineer.
The most distinct part of the band was Billy's voice.
Corgan's voice is one of the most unique in rock, much like Chris Cornell's voice, but not similar to Chris.
way better than gay ass Nirvana and Radiohead and Weezer or whatever the usual band people say when they say best 90s rock band
Big Tunes Billy is too busy saving wrestling to care about this.
They were too widespread musically, even in the same album, to have a defined sound that makes them hugely influential. That's what made them a great band, but not what gives them influence. They are still culturally significant and influential to many in certain aspects
I'd argue their most influential work was Adore as that really was an album that came before its time. Like 2 years later with Kid A
just saw them play something new on one of the late nights. terrible, like cringey terrible.
Violent Soho.
>Nirvana
Headed by dumb heroin junky so fucked up he can't even pronounce words. Also shit drummer.
>Radiohead
Gay hipster bullshit
>Weezer
1 good song
Still, I think we all know that the best 90s band was: Alice in Chains.
Thinking they weren't distinct is pretty hilarious
The only true MBV ripoff was Daydream, Siamese Dream is way more influenced by Catherine then My Bloody Valentine
the best 90s band was Kyuss hands down
Sorry, I was talking about 90s bands that actually mattered.
>I don't know a single band that claims them as an influence
>Their sound has not really trickled down into modern rock
have you ever even listened to my chemical romance? guy wishes he were billy corgan so fucking bad, and they were almost inarguably the most popular and era defining modern rock band of the 2000s
Adore is like a proto Ok Computer.
followed by Ween and Fishbone
Even though it came out after OK Computer?
>and they were almost inarguably the most popular and era defining modern rock band of the 2000s
These guys were world class superstars while MCR was building their fanbase on Myspace. Not an argument about who was better, but I think if one band defines the 00's it's these faggots.
Yes
she was always hideous without caked on makeup and soft filter photography. i met her in the mellon collie period.
don't be a fucking idiot, the adore sounds was so 90s, babylon zoo with spaceman was before it and was a hit. it's a cheezy pop song, def fx defrhyme, marilyn manson. shit man adore was not really original. it was good, but definitely a product of it's time. that batman song was pretty good too.
>Weezer
>1 good song
maybe but Beverly Hills surpasses most bands whole discographies
I was talking about that Toto cover actually
They're the Alexander Alekhine of music, it's impossible for most normal people to go in the direction they went and stay sane. Doing shoegaze and baroque pop well enough to sustain commercial success for several years just doesn't seem doable anymore at all.
but nirvana and radiohead are good two
nirvana the pumpkins and radiohead are like the big 3 popular bands of the 90s
Big doesn't mean good. And good is completely subjective anyway. I love Smashing Pumpkins, hate Nirvana and Radiohead. Obviously you feel differently. I'm not going to tell you you're wrong for having feelings.
Is that a bad thing? Why does a band have to influence other bands? They don't. What does that have to do with how good their music is? Nothing.
I don't understand what they mean
The best reply itt
You forgot about Oasis and maybe Blur
>what is Deftones?
>what is Tool?
>what is Silversun pickups?
>what is Hum?
also Linkin Park definetely were influenced by SP
eminem - venom
theres only one jimmy, so
Oloff clearly has a pretty big SP influence
for me. its hum electra 2000
The Beatles disprove this theory right off the bat.
Alice In Chains is a band for pseuds. People always say that that is their favorite grunge band to look cool, but most people in the grunge scene didn’t particularly like them or even count them as grunge. They were more like a hair metal band, but dressed in flannel.
If you want to try to be patrician, at least choose an actual good grunge band like Soundgarden.
