i really like the idea of using the atmosphere and droney soundscapes of ambient music to create like a sonic void of hopelessness and sadness. not really sure of what i'm saying but if you know any music that sounds like that, feel free to share it.
Depressing ambient music?

I would say Boards of Canada, something like Geogaddi? but i'm a pleb when it comes to depressing/ominous ambient so I could be talking out of my ass.
Any other anons got good recs around OP's description? I wouldn't mind listening to some as well.
one of my favourite albums.. not very uplifting youtube.com
yeah i really like that album, but still feels kind of uplifting imo, good taste though.

you know grouper, right?
I know what dark ambient is, but it tends to be more eerie or anxious rather than depressing, or maybe we just have different concepts of what a depressing piece of music is.
yeah, she's one of my all time favs.

Try Paysage d'hiver. Cold cold beautiful and depressed winter ambient

Anything by Alicks really but specifically these:
Alicks - Everything Is So Beautiful
Alicks - Untitled EP
Lorn - A/D, Music For Picture
Orlogin - Cracks in the Sky
Interested in knowing what you think. Also really interested if someone has more recommendations similar to mentioned since I have a hard time finding stuff like this, but it's one of my favorite types of sounds.
Bass Communion always puts me in a sad mood.
Reminds me of BoC's early stuff
Because newfags.
Found this track last year randomly on youtube and was in awe.

>ambient
>drum and bass
It works so fucking well it's not funny.
I'm getting a little bit bored of that pump kick compression technique such as in "deathly" by Alicks. It's great when you get it right, but it also adds a wall to the flow of ambient sounds.
Listen to Burials self titled, the kicks are loud, but the compression is shorter and so they're choppy and clear without removing the apparent volume of the ambient sounds around it.

Listening to that now, I'm shocked by how little low end he has in the beat, or at least how little apparent low end. Makes that boomy bass stand out AND allows it to slow over the beat.
looked up that tune, and yea, the sidechained compression makes it feel more like Tycho or old Flying Lotus than any ambient junt
Yeah I agree, some of the songs on the album are "more" ambient than others. I just like the more sad atmosphere that Alicks sets than it just being dark. I was hesitant to recommend anything other than Untitled EP honestly.
Also I really love that whole album by Burial.
I think you'd like this one
