It's basically those mid-90s and later radio rock bands that took a thin slice of the edge from the earlier "grunge" stuff but that sound decidedly more tame and generic. Nickelback is the quintessential buttrock band that absolutely defins the term, other big one include 3 doors down, Creed, Live, Hinder, Seether, Puddle of Mudd, Five Finger Death Punch, Staind, Switchfoot, Theory of a Deadman, Collective Soul, Uncle Kracker, 3 days grace, Skillet and such other bands like these.
