start with the basics. Iron maiden. Metallica. Listen to their three best praised albums. Decide if wether you like melodic stuff or heavy stuff. Check blind guardian if you`re into melodic stuff. Old megadeth if you`re into the heavy stuff. And from that point on you just gotta go around searching other bands

Start off with Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth (this will be the test if you can handle rawer vocals), Slayer, Iron Maiden, Rainbow (I see people saying Dio but personally I like the Dio Rainbow albums better), Black Sabbath, Saxon (not considered essential these days but they damn well should be), Angel Witch (also not considered essential but should be), Motorhead, etc.
