When you're trying to improve speed, how much of it is perfecting the technique at a slower speed and how much of it is pushing your fingers to try to keep up so they eventually feel better at speed?
Perfect the technique at a lower speed and you will naturally be able to play it quicker
Obviously hsh is the best config, especially if you can coil split the humbuckers. Planning on modding this guitar with a floyd instead of the lo-trs 1 it has and putting in some dimarzios and the coil splitting .
It's entirely the first one. If you practice at a tempo so high you're playing sloppily to keep up, you'll just engrain sloppy playing. Practice makes permanent.
Guess I've been doing it wrong for the last decade. So much practice and such a hard plateau for so long. Guess it took a long break from the instrument to be able to come at it fresh and in a way that I can actually improve. Cheers.

Anyone else practice mostly on steel string acoustic? I feel like if you can play cleanly on an acoustic you can play cleanly on any electric guitar.
I prefer to play on electric. My acoustic has ridiculously high action so I like to tune it to open tunings and play slide on it.
Does it bother anyone else how this is mostly just moving the same basic pattern up and down the neck? Same tension in every run, same resolution. I get that it's just a noodly kind of practice exercise but it all sounds so homogeneous. I'm not super familiar with him as a player but I'd wager his live playing is pretty similar. Dude's got chops though.
It's more difficult to play cleanly on an amplified electric with a clean tone, interestingly.

The best is to practice on acoustics, clean electric, distorted electric, and bass. Each one will improve different aspects of your playing. Learn keys and drums also.

I can yell up to A4 but that causes strain and I lost my voice with it and now I'm trying to learn proper technique
I can also reach lows like B1 but they're still too shit to be used in singing, they need work also

watch the video "speed kills" with michael angelo batio. the problem you are probably having is when you speed up your technique changes to stabilise your hand. try playing one note as fast as you can alternate picking. notice how your hand position changes, now do it that way slow. it's not about practice, it's about correct practice.

Unfortunately my modelling amp doesn't take pedals well otherwise I would use that one. These are the tones I'm trying to achieve. I know for certain that Ulver used an MT2 on that album and it would be quite easy to get this harsh sound with the EQ. They played it into a JCM800 though.
