Album art affects how I perceive the album. I kind of get color autism, but not synesthesia. Like if the album art is dominated by one color scheme, e.g. Ride the Lightning or Spectral Sorrows or most Necrolord albums are very "blue" sounding.

I enjoy an album as an artistic whole. Or more precisely, I enjoy its general ambiance, which is neither music, nor artworks, but a feeling they all give me holistically.

then recently I was at a big festival I've been going to annually for over 10 years. Parkway Drive was one of the headliners this time. I watched their show more or less accidentally, and I hate to admit it, but those guys are pretty good. And I feel like the entire festival was in front of that stage, hardcore kids, guys with thrash/black/death metal cuts, everyone was watching and visibly enjoying them.

are bands like that the future of "mainstream" metal?

What festival? I went to Wacken and they played and were pretty good. I’ve noticed Europe they don’t seem to care if people listen to Korn and say Sabbat or another underground band, very different from the US. Parkway Drive is probably one of the better metalcore bands and actually good but the genre is trash overall.

I was surprised with how good it was despite all the negative reviews - Glemselens elv, Kaimadalthas' nedstigning, and that random black/thrash song in the middle are fantastic. Is Umskiptar and the rest of his later shit worth checking out?

Grand Magus and Anaal Nathrakh played killer shows this year. AN played at like 3 am and the crowd went completely nuts, during Forward! we had 3 walls of death.

Wacken’s pits were honestly kinda underwhelming, I was expecting a thousand man wall of death for Slayer since it’s y’know their final european fest, and maybe 100 people were in it. An exodus pit in my town with maybe 1000 people at the show was worse. It was fun but not as brutal as I expected. I’d love to see Grand Magus.

If you get the chance, absolutely go see those guys. Pure heavy metal bands like them have become a rare breed. They were playing the side stage at the same time Eluveitie was playing on the main stage, and I pitied everyone that went to see those fucks instead of GM. you could hear people singing that fucking chant from Hammer of the North for like 10 minutes after the show had ended.
