What is a good humbucker?
I have a Charvel with a Super Distortion in the bridge. It's so high output, I find it's near unusable for cleans. It sounds great with my dirt cranked, but the moment it turns off, it's just unremarkable and brittle.
If it matters I use a JC120 with a DS-1 and TS808.

you have bad technique and can't cope well with flatter fretboards and higher actions because of it (which are actually normal for acoustic guitars) but a really thin neck with a low action is more forgiving of weird thumb positions and other flawed techniques because there's very little neck to get in your way and fretting is effortless
buy an acoustic and don't play electric again until you're good with it
I'm interested in a Jazz Chorus amp. I can afford the JC-22 or JC-40. I tried out the 40 in store and I found it exceptionally loud. Like I have the volume at 0.5 out of 10 and it's playable, anything higher is way too much.
Is this normal? How do I make it a little more manageable, would a volume pedal in the FX loop help?

Nylon string guitars are even easier. They have no string tension at all.

Yeah, the SG comes with 10s and all the other guitars come with 9s. You were feeling fretting effort due to string gauge. Ibanez guitars sometimes come with 10s but have super low buzzy action to negate it.

Did you actually try it louder? Not all pots are equal, some will 'load' their effectiveness at lower levels to make it seem like they're louder than they actually are. Some might give you 20 watts at a level 2 and others will give you 2 watts.
That said, 40 watts is loud as fuck even for SS unless you're gigging a fairly large club. I have an old 65 watt crate amp that hasn't ever had to go past 7ish to be loud enough to fill a school gym.
all the virtuosos of today play ibanez guitars.only a small minority still play fender, an equally small minority plays ESP, an even smaller minority prefers gibsons (it's mostly guys who are "good for a rock star"), and like one guy plays schecter.
take a look at what they're doing, and then realize your left hand already agreed. if "good enough" doesn't cut it, get an ibanez.

Pickups are incapable of compressing signals. Your amp with shit for headroom is compressing it because it can't handle the voltage peaks in the signal, the pickup just reproduces different frequency ranges that sound brighter or duller to your ears.
An EMG with a preamp is compressed because the preamp compresses and clips. A super distortion does not compress, it can't, it's just a pickup.

One of those Les Paul Studios with the light finish (sometimes called "faded"). Get it on markdown. Just make sure it has a mahogany body and doesn't have dot inlays or some weird headstock (Gibson does weird things with Studio models from time to time), you should be good. Buy a hardshell case later.

if a bass pickup "overloads" a guitar amp, it'll just compress the fuck out of the bass frequencies. the only hardware that's generating any real electrical power is, in his case, the guitar amp, and it shouldn't blow any speakers unless it's something retarded like cranking a 100W amp into speakers rated for 50W
that said, playing a bass amp into a guitar cab will probably destroy the speakers pretty quickly
The idea is that the guitars sound ever so slightly different while unamped and that translates over to the pickups.
