>Much of the media attention "You Get What You Give" received centered on the closing lyrics:

>"Health insurance, rip-off lying
>FDA, big bankers buying
>Fake computer crashes dining
>Cloning while they're multiplying
>Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson,
>Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
>You're all fakes, run to your mansions
>Come around, we'll kick your ass in."

>According to lead singer Gregg Alexander, he had written this section for the song as a test to see whether the media would focus on the important political issues of the first few lines, or the petty celebrity-dissing. As suspected, a considerable amount of press began to appear about the name-dropping, and the other political issues were largely ignored.[1]

>Marilyn Manson commented that he was "not mad he said he'd kick my ass, I just don't want to be used in the same sentence with Courtney Love.... I'll crack his [Alexander's] skull open if I see him."[2] Beck reported that Alexander personally apologized for the line when they met each other by chance in a supermarket, claiming that it was never meant to be personal.[3] Alexander collaborated with Hanson, whose drummer, Zac Hanson, called him "a bit of a character, but a cool guy."[4]

Who was in the right here?

Hear this song every day at work.

>would focus on the important political issues of the first few lines
Listing off random shit isn't really a deep discussion of sociopolitical issues.

>Marilyn Manson commented that he was "not mad
>I'll crack his [Alexander's] skull open if I see him
Fucking schizo weirdo

you gotta respect this guy.
tries for 10 years

>doesnt go on drugs
>doesnt suicide
>doesnt lose his shit

A really great feel good song. You just can't help singing along.

He was great at writing feel good songs in the late 90s/early00s

He also co-wrote a Kaiser Cheifs song that was released this year. Cool he's still active.

go away todd

musically the song ripped off todd rundgren's 70s pop styling

WE'LL KICK YOUR ASS IN

>>Marilyn Manson commented that he was "not mad he said he'd kick my ass, I just don't want to be used in the same sentence with Courtney Love
Based

>In a Time interview, U2 lead guitarist The Edge is quoted saying "You Get What You Give" is the song he is "most jealous of. I really would love to have written that.

yeah I saw the new Todd episode too

?

>important political issues of the first few lines
lmao imagine being in your 30s, writing babby's first political anthem after reading the first half chapter of your first Howard Zinn book and thinking you're discussing 'important political issues'

Wow. No way, I didn't know he was such a prolific songwriter. Is he like the male Cathy Dennis or something?

Is he still cute?

He also wrote 2003's The Game of Love, performed by Santana and Michelle Branch.

I recognise those people, but not the song.

It was a colossal hit at the time. It's not a bad tune. Smooth was by far the superior Santana w/ guest vocalist summer jam by a country mile.

There's no fucking way you haven't heard that song.

See, now I remember THAT.

Did the singer try to come back as a soloist? Or am I just making that up?

She had a string of hit singles in the 2 year period prior to that - Everywhere and All You Wanted were top 40 hits. They did the collab to cash in on her rising fame. She got married, had a kid and pretty much quit releasing music.

Also, the same year she did the Santana collab her 2nd major label album dropped and she had two more hot 100 singles - Breathe and Are You Happy Now

>YouTube's

Ok, I recall it now, but Smooth was FAR more memorable. It got played all the Goddamn time, maybe it's 'cus I'm not from the USA?

Maybe. Game of Love still gets radio okay here. Probably more than Smooth.

I was referring to the male singer on smooth.

I know people used to confuse her for Vanessa Carlton all the time, does not the fact that they were at their popularity at the same time.

Oh. That was Rob Thomas who was in the middle of his very successful run as the front man of Matchbox Twenty at the time. He later ventured into a solo career that also saw a few hit singles.

If I'm going to hear a Santana song on UKTV or radio is definitely going to be Smooth more than the other one.

Yeah, I think I remember when he went solo when I was kind of surprised. I thought to myself is that the same guy from the Santana Smooth video?

I've never checked out his group though, would you recommend it?

Goodnight Yea Forums.

Matchbox Twenty was competent '90s post-grunge and later pop rock. Not bad. Worth a look if you're nostalgic or particularly enjoyed those genres, but nothing to really write home about.

Radio PLAY. I'm a dirty phone poster.

Todd in the Shadows is a youtuber who makes pop music reviews. He's mostly popular for his section discussing one-hit wonders, of which this song is the latest installment.

He also discovered a song from Alexander's previous solo efforts that may be the most hilariously bad song ever.
