Grimes and Billie are both industry plants who only got signed due to connections, but I can at least give Grimes credit for writing and producing her own songs and for having a better singing voice than Billie.

I also think in Grimes' case, her quirkiness is authentic (she's certainly on the autism spectrum) but with Billie it feels so contrived, like her PR team is specifically telling her to play up a certain image in order to win over more consumers.

In the 80s, music fans hated top 40 music so they started making their own music which created a fairly strong independent music scene that threatened to topple the majors.

The major labels conspired and took over the indie music scene by undermining their distribution model. That was the main reason for the PMRC hearings and eventual Parental Advisory warning stickers.

The indie scene was uncensored. There was music with swears and other fun stuff that the majors couldn't put in their big box stores. The stickers allowed them to do that, while undermining the indie record stores and producers.

By signing indie bands in the 90s, they were able to take over the entire music scene and shape it so they conveniently get paid by everyone.

They worked in collusion with companies like Ticketmaster to jack up prices by installing extra fees on consumers, and other companies like Clear Channel to make sure their music gets played and no one else's does.

That's why it's easy for them to push Artists like this and get all kinds of hype.
