They tried so hard to make things "spicy" but it just turned out to be shlock. The point where the vocal kicks in was not a "moment" Its just sounds like all other jazz school hip hop whatever it is that these guys are all doing. I hope this puts the meme to rest. Music school does kill creativity. An interesting case study and worth watching.
what the literal fuck is wrong that ben guy i mean holy shit
James Lee
Absolutely terrible.
Benjamin Howard
Just stop watching T.V you goofs wtf
Kevin Anderson
>numales, bugmen and soiboi galore he is a jew
Jose Clark
not so sure that it's necessarily that "music school kills creativity" but moreso that "a metric fuckton of uncreative people learn how to write the same song"
Xavier King
Maybe its actually that uncreative people seek music school. If you think about it at 18 years old you are in your prime time to make a music career. You got 10 years to make it happen. The uncreatives go to music school as some sort of cope. A place to meet people. A place to improve. Basically its admitting you dont at that moment believe in yourself enough to go for it.
Paying big money to learn about music is such a shit investment. Not only everything you said, but also this shit just sounds so fucking forced. There's no reason it's being written or played. It conveys nothing from anyone. Imagine writing music and not having any connection to it except "I want to fill x amount of time and I like making noise." Just play a fucking jazz standard or something. This isn't even mechanically impressive like some wanky virtuoso, which is at least interesting in a "photorealistic painting" way. This is like walking up to a stranger on the street and saying "wow sure is sunny out today!"
Jacob Ward
Oh yeah definitely, the "music school will teach me how to be able to write good music" mentality.
Jayden Wood
>One bad band proves my hypothesis
Julian Rivera
Well put. Writing for the sake of writing. No one here as anything to say. Ellen in my nightmare Oprah on the TV. Its like AI trying to make art. Oh yeah that seems deep lets do that. He even gives insight into his fakery. I want to make it sound like they are her words. Its anti-art
Jeremiah Perry
Show me the jazz school band that is authentic. Dream Theatre? Vulfpeck? Its music by souless people for souless people. Maybe youre just souless.
Dominic Parker
No amount of music theory will make you able to write something compelling. Although to be fair, I enjoy some of the stuff Adam Neely has done, particularly this youtube.com/watch?v=0BRxDp2u02U
he's probably the only one there with any remote amount of creativity
Jayden Bailey
Neeley is on the fence. He reminds me of DATA from star trek. Like he is self aware that he is a robot. The guy is trying to be a real musician. Ill give him that. The Drums carry Sungazer. Drummers are a lot more like athletes than musicians, so musical training is to their benefit.
Sebastian Jackson
Music theory is besides the point in my opinion. You can learn theory without saying "I'm going to go spend 4 years learning a barely marketable skill for a premium price and turn music into a literal assignment for myself." That cheapens music because you make it just to move on from it. Great if you want to be in a wedding band or write jingles, but probably detrimental if you want to make art that is cathartic to you and really puts something outside yourself that is hard to express. If one of these people went through a hard experience and removed themselves from being oversaturated musically for a while I'm sure they could come back and write something compelling.
Anthony Perry
>If you think about it at 18 years old you are in your prime time to make a music career. You got 10 years to make it happen. .....You do realize there are other career options for musicians besides "trying to make it as a pop star" right?
Luis Jenkins
Yeah I would definitely agree. A lot of the synth/ electronic parts on sungazer tracks are pretty uninspired but I like a lot of the bass work.
Very true, I wasn't really thinking about that aspect of it.
Brandon Davis
As a music teacher and washed up music school jazz guy I am just dying to hear your insights. What pray tell are these magnificent other careers? Let me guess a business positions that sells music that has nothing to do with music aside from it being a product to sell. Don't tell me you bought the jingle writer memes from the sitcoms of the 80s. Remember when every father character was a widow who made jingles!
Camden Gomez
yeah these music school'd video essayists are depressing as fuck the worst one being rick beato
Zachary Roberts
sounds like he might have been referring in part to a career as a bitter music teacher
Ian Flores
Rick Beato has become a mouth piece for boomers. Muh John Bonham. Top 10 lists ala letterman. Get off my lawn! Buy my book. He is the saddest because his early videos were quite good. Now he live streams for pay pigs. Who are these people sending him $50. He is a tragic story of how a computer can control you. He is literally in too deep. There is no saving Rick.
Ryan Gonzalez
Rick Beato doesn't make "video essays" so clearly have never watched anything on his channel.
God this whole fucking thread is trolls. Why the fuck did I start replying to this shit.
Connor Baker
for me just knowing what kind of "feel" i can get from certain modes and scales and transposition of base notes is all i need from music theory
Grayson Wright
shut up rick
Jason Myers
I ironically also did jingles for a brief period before Youtube started providing their own license free music. Music as a product is dying. Music as a hobby is now the meta business. Talking about music and producs to make music. Being a musician is the product now. Its a big Larpfest hence the muh theory meme. I see so many people on this board inventing terms and pretending to be musically literate. Thats just where we are at now. Like people who say they love science but really just like pictures of outerspace and hearing guys like black science guy talk because music is so worthless that the discussion is the actual entertainment. You know its true. Thats why you are here entertaining yourself instead of practicing or listening to music.
Bentley Morgan
As a music school graduate currently making a career as musician in the film/TV industry, DON'T go to music school if you want to be a performer, especially of your own music, you will be wasting your time. Music school is helpful and cool if you're looking for a different type of career within music. They don't teach you anything you couldn't learn yourself one way or the other though, it's just quicker and more efficient, and good professors serve as noise reducers to get you only the best of the juicy signal. Also, contacts, industry skills, etc
Charles Bailey
Also fragments of that song have always been playing at the end of his videos. That may be another reason for your liking of the song
Anthony Carter
>because music is so worthless that the discussion is the actual entertainment. You know its true. Thats why you are here entertaining yourself instead of practicing or listening to music.
this is so hilariously true. and I'm also an active research scientist so I award you double internets for making me laugh twice.
Did you lose faith in music as an art form or in the listener?
Julian Miller
I have a BA in orchestral performance lol. I play well over 300 gigs a year, session work, touring, shitty bar gigs, random corporate events, teach, and as true as much of what you said is true, there’s an invaluable experience I gained from all my years of playing in all the different ensembles I did. It gave me a very strong ear for picking up styles and tunes on the fly, watching subtle body cues and reading and directing a songs energy. This a certain level of awareness that is taught unintentionally I think that has really helped me keep as busy as I do.
Pic is a festival I played in Colorado last weekend.
I spend most of my time now playing piano and becoming proficient at that. Really want to write, record, and perform my own shit.
>Ellen in the nightmare, Oprah on the screen >Watching people live takes the life out of me You can be the best musician in the world, but your songs will be shit if you can't come up with decent lyrics. Holy shit they're awful lyricists.
Parker White
>taking cues from other people and filling in the blanks makes you better at being a cog enlightening. unironically good luck with writing something of your own sometime.
David Reed
In this town a lot of work is picked up last minute, so you’re forced to improvised based on what’s going on around you. Some people write hits or stops in their tunes and the best you get is as your playing they’ll gesture you catch a hit/stop. You can take the safe route and steam roll right along with the groove but some moments don’t call for that and I’m really good at anticipating what’s happening around me, it’s fun for me like that, I tend to have the most fun on gigs I’ve never played before. It keeps me on my toes. Few people can do that well, I blame academic ensembles for that. Music is social, or a cog as you put it. I’ll write tunes and hire musicians to play my tunes and speak their voice over my charts. But whatever, thanks
Nathaniel Carter
I love some of Bent Knee’s stuff, some genuinely incredible, powerful shit here and there that has a good mixture of technicality that doesn’t sound bland and only from within the brain. There are some tracks that are kind of skippable, some lyrics that are pretty wince worthy. Byeah that song was nice, nothing significant at all though. Not too engaging.
Adrian Price
Wait if youre a drummer I covered this point. Drummers are closer to athletes. Training is good for drummers. As the other user put it crassly you are but a cog. Nothing worse than a drummer trying to segue into being a musician/writer. Youre here to serve musicians not become one. I unironically think Muslims have a point of claiming music is Haram. Its just fashion. I listen to xyz I am xyz. Its for kids. This is why people listen to music of their youth. If it was art and we were appreciators of art we would seek new expression not the same comfortable nostalgia inducing product. I was raised in music so I was just good at it. It never was art to me. Im like weird Al more than anything else. I can copy your music and mock it because I speak the language. There isnt that much to it. Even mozart isnt really doing that much. He is just working with some heavy machinery in the form of the orchestra.
Jaxson Davis
I’m not making my music to be a cash cow. It’s for my personal creative outlet, you know “art” and stuff.
Matthew Cooper
ok man I didn't post that with any judgement. just saying, there is a huge difference between facilitating an overall performance and being an artist. when have you practiced being an artist? sounds like you just like drumming to me. which is cool as far as I'm concerned.
Henry Gray
More like fart har har har. I hope youre under 30 and single, otherwise its just sad. No one cares about your art. Maybe you can use it to score some pootang and all the power to ya.
Michael Edwards
>Im like weird Al more than anything else. I can copy your music and mock it because I speak the language.
Jack Dejohnette has beautiful compositions, Tony Williams has the life time records, art blakey was art blakey, billy cobham had all of his shit in the 70s. Roy Ayers, Lionel Hampton, nigga you’re just talking shit
Levi Harris
Dont forget Bill Stewart. Are you done name dropping people that only I have heard of in this thread? God drummers are insufferable. This is exactly why you will produce trash. Drummers are programmed to please and suffer and inferiority complex. "Uh so do you want a swing feel? Or I could do more of a straight shuffle" Im here to serve the song" God I don't miss the scene at all. Worst part of being a musician was hanging around musicians. Bunch of carbon copy clones trying to come off as individuals. Circlejerk central.
Joseph Taylor
Yeah I make my living drumming for all kinds of artists. I spend the time I’m not playing for artists practicing being an “artist”. Developing the facility to clearly articulate ideas I hear in my head to pass on to other musicians and eventually an audience. Some of my friends are totally content with just playing drums for artists and that’s it. I want to write tunes too. It’s just funny how you’d dismiss drummers for being “writers/musicians”. Who actually unironically believes that. Genesis bruh
Henry Hughes
Oof. You’re in a dark place aren’t you? Well if you want more names check out Carter McLean Mike Mitchell, I’m the only one to ever mention him on this board for the clinically jaded Dan Weiss Christian Lillinger Joey Baron Want me to name more “obscure” people to show you how woke I am. I hope you crawl out of that hole
my problem with people like him is that they can't keep it simple and try putting all their immense music knowledge into a song but they forget to make it sound good
Xavier White

Jaxon Brooks
Sooo, you don't have a favorite "artist"? Ha, even having that become a fashion. Anyway, at least you should have a composition that bring some strong emotions to you
Cooper Green
Ya this youtube.com/watch?v=9Fle2CP8gR0 Everything else he did is kinda meandering trash but he hit something here. Whats with the term "artist" it's a bullshit term made up in the 90s to describe people who didn't write their own music. They used to call RandB singers "artists" Now you call RandB hip hop. Fuck just call the person a singer. This is how we ended up with assholes like Kanye West
Gavin Perry
sad!
Nicholas Flores
>I think the reason I’m so old now is because I studied music in college. I have a degree in music. I just wanted to learn as much as I could before having to get out and do it for a living.
