how saturated is the geosciences field atm? i was thinking of majoring in it when i go back to college but i haven't found any data regarding the amount of job openings to degree holders

also ice cream scooper atm

it's saturated, saturated with potheads and alcoholics. if you're serious about it, major in the sciences, then apply to work for the USGS over the summer. If you don't get in, offer to volunteer. Yes, volunteer. If you volunteer and they like you (as in you're not a sperg), they will almost certainly put you up as a student in short order, or at the very least during the next summer.

I've been unemployed for ages, and the market is really unpredictable. Usually when a project has to make cuts, the geologists are the first ones to get trimmed off. Expect to spend your career moving to tiny towns in the middle of buttfuck nowhere with meh pay while your finance/programmer friends party it up in major cities. Yeah, I'm bitter.

Depends how good you are at networking. Check out r/GeologyCareers to get a better picture of what you'll be in for. I thought I liked being outdoors (being an avid golfer in my youth), but remote mining sites and oil rigs are depressing, man.
