When a band's most "eh" work is viewed as their masterpiece to the casual public

When a band's most "eh" work is viewed as their masterpiece to the casual public.....

Has their ever been a bigger example of that than Metallica's Black Album? I don't HATE it, but it is in no way better than any album that came before it.

I love how they went with the minimalistic dark cover art but kept their tacky, autistic metal logo.

Pretty sure it was a reference to Spın̈al Tap. Lars can say otherwise all he wants, but how could it not be?

>When a band's most "eh" work is viewed as their masterpiece to the casual public...
All of the fucking time?

wait I thought ride the lightning was the universally acclaimed one

Enter Sandman is easily they're most popular and recognizable song globally

Attached: Cover.jpg (1000x1000, 824K)

>4 out of the 5 most played Metallica videos on YouTube are from black album (Nothing Else Matters is on there twice)
>3 out of 5 top Metallica songs on Spotify are from black album
RtL and MoP are usually neck and neck in actual fan discussions but Black is easily their most overblown

megadeth is better

RtL is metalhead acclaimed, but the Black Album has gotta be one of the highest selling albums of all time, and if you ever talk to any normalfags IRL which songs they like they'll probably say something like Enter Sandman or Nothing Else Matters is the best Metallica song ever.

what?

>wahh actual metal aesthetics are so stupid and cringeworthy why can't all metal bands appeal to my pretentious idea of maturity, like Deafheaven and other hipster bands who are really mature and progressive I swear

Most popular with normalfags=/=their masterpiece
Most normalfags don't even care about albums. They know about Enter Sandman but they couldn't tell what album it was on or even what year it is from.

lol nah it's Black Album or Master of Puppets getting all the praise

I didn't say it was their masterpiece, I said normalfags hail it as that.

I've met many a gym bro and frat boy who said Black Album is their greatest album because it has the most hits, Load/Reload a couple times as well but that's more of a rarity.

SLIPKNOTS NSYNC ALBUM FROM 2004 IS WAY WORSE THAN THIS

>I didn't say it was their masterpiece
OP said that normalfags hail it as their masterpiece when most normalfags probably don't even know that it exists.

That's actually a pretty decent thing to compare...
>Hey man play some Slipknot
>*Plays the self titled album*
>What? No I meant the good stuff, do have Duality on that thing?
Real story of mine happened with my normie little cousin.

They play Enter Sandman at baseball games, and it's one of the highest selling albums in history. Plenty of normies know it exists, for many it's probably the only metal album they own along with maybe Disturbed or Five Finger Dick Pinch

Nu metal did it way worse than thrash metal. At least after thrash there was pantera death metal after nu metal we just went back to 90s music

I am just trying to make the point that most normies don't even think in terms of "albums" and "masterpieces". They listen to whatever is popular and might have even bought the album but only a small fraction of them will ever reach a thought like "Wait, this band has a bunch of albums. Which one is the best?" or "Wait, is this album actually a musically significant achievement?".

Slip Sour

This is an alternative cover though, the original has just the shape of the logo with no 3D like letters or texture.

Nirvana - Nevermind

If you're counting Incesticide then I guess you could argue that that's their most eh album but if not then I would probably rank it below both Bleach and In Utero, although everyone seems to praise it like its one of the best rock albums of all time.

both this, and Master of Puppets are highly praise because of the approach to the recording process and the resulting production job. The instrumental breaks and catchy songwriting wouldn't have taken them anywhere if they also didn't have big change in approach to recording. The Black Album is more famous in this fact based on Bob Rock coming in, the year long duration, and million dollar budget blown to make that album. MOP however was a big step in production compared to RTL. Far more editing and punching in parts, far more use of multi tracking guitars to a get a bigger more sculpted guitar sound, even did the trick where the band played slower with detuned guitars on difficult parts so the engineer would speed it up back to proper tempo.

Metallica's biggest "innovations" for metal were actually more about how they were recorded rather than what they wrote or played.

How could anyone think this is better than Hunky Dory? Or Low? Or Heroes? Or Lodger? Or Scary Monsters? Or Station to Station? It's not better than, say, Diamond Dogs or The Man Who Sold the World. The Ziggy Stardust tour was pretty good though.

It's because of the persona he created. It wasn't even knew at the time as many artists had done this sort of thing already, but for some reason people thought it was a big revolution. Also, shitheads go "woah it's like an album but the songs tell a whole story so deep" when they hear a concept album no matter how tenuous and shitty the narrative actually is. They hear weak tracks like Soul Love and just convince themselves they're good because they fit into a story. Hunky Dory and Station to Station are much better.

>even did the trick where the band played slower with detuned guitars on difficult parts so the engineer would speed it up back to proper tempo
That's so metal!

>but kept their tacky, autistic metal logo.

Metallica's only good album was Kill 'Em All, I dont mind select songs from some of their other albums but their only album that I feel is through and through good is Kill 'Em All

For sure, Maiden is my favorite band and I've listened to their first 7 albums unironically more times than I can probably count and I've always come back to Beast the least, Di'Anno's albums are far more enjoyable
22 Acacia Avenue is fantastic though

Of course its great its made by pink floyd. But their others are better

sound production, mixing and mastering is interstellar on this disc.
this is the reason imo

>weak tracks like soul love
ishygddt

How did I not notice that was a lolibertatian snake this whole time?

wherever i may roam is the best metallica song, period

Unironically agree.

Based post here

>but it is in no way better than any album that came before it.
This is true but in context with the rest of your post, it's hardly their most 'eh' album. Everything after that was sleeping tablets in disk form.

I was there... No one said "meh" or "eh" at the time when it was released.
Everyone was saying "wow".
Admittedly at the time I was chatting with my old lady on the telegraph, in morse code, and the TV was only blak&white, as the real life itself back then.

>wherever i may roam is the best metallica song, period
Not even top 10

Incesticide has all the choice Nirvana songs. It’s the document of how Kurt actually viewed his own band.

and there are people who even claim that is has THE BEST production on any rock album... imagine being this deaf and retarded
horrible album compaired to their first 4 in every aspect.

Uhm production wise it's lesser value than the first 4, including that one that has no bass whatsoever ever through the never?

both load and reload are better than the black album, both in terms of songs and overall sonics

>When a band's most broadly appealing work is viewed as their masterpiece to the casual public.....*
I am truly shocked user.

Is this even disputed on Yea Forums? It's pretty much a known fact unless you're a Facebook boomer

>metal is bad
>hur hur why people are defending a genre i don't like? Why don't you see i am always right? Why i clicked in a thread of a thing i don't like to begin with it? hur hur

biggest THIS i've ever given

list 5 that are better

No Leaf Clover
King Nothing
Broken, Beat, and Scared
Ride the Lightning
Seek and Destroy

Metal aesthetics don't appeal too many stereotypical gay people man, don't gotta change it just cause you're not part of the party, we have our lane and you have yours.

doubt anybody would agree but pic related is best metallica sound

yikes

>I was there... No one said "meh" or "eh" at the time when it was released.
>Everyone was saying "wow".
Yeah, like the new Metallica fans who were like "wow that band stopped making just noise? this is great now!"

Im sorry you got filtered user :(

It's the best if you prefer alternative country western blues rock to heavy metal, I would agree.
