The only good tortoise album is the first one, millions now living is so-so and everything after is kinda bad
this unfortunately
a lot of Tortoise member side projects have decent stuff though
>millions
>So-so
But it's their best.
Gastr Del Sol
The Sea and Cake
Isotope 217
Am I missing any side projects that have good albums?
How are the others bad? Millions is arguably better.
>Removes Djed
>keeps Japanese bonus tracks
aahhh, that's better. Now it's a great album.
it clicked again

What are you on brother, shits dope.
wtf dude
Swung from the Gutters at least is one of the best post-rock track ever
it never even clicked for me
Relistening it right Now and is a bit better than i remembered, but it's still plagued by too much wankery and a less interesting atmosphere compare to the debut. A Survey is a third-rate Gastr del Sol cut, The Taut and Tame is pure marimba-prog masturbation and Gamera start great with that atmospheric guitar line but quickly devolve in an aimless maximalist Neu! jam. As said both japanese bonus tracks are actually better. TNT is basically all marimba-prog masturbation with forced IDM influence that deep very dated now, maybe is their worst, at least Standards is actually entertaining in some points. The self-titled still stands out for is lack of unnecessary wank (excluding Ry Cooder) and consistent atmosphere, it makes me actually feel like am watching the sunset at the beach with my friends
May have a bit too much wankery but I dig it nontheless.
I lean, it's obviously all subjective taste, i can't stand a lot of prog and jazz for the same reason, but there are many people that like it nonetheless
it used to be my favorite album
Hey as long as we can agree that prog at least tops jam band trash.
It depends on what kind of jam we are talking about. If it's shit like Grateful Dead or Phish then i agree, if we are talking about stuff like Taj Mahal Travellers or Pärson Sound then i kindly disagree
Seems a tad strange for yeah to like any form of jam band but hate wankery so vehemently
I don't get the "tortoise is bad" meme, is it just because of shillary?
I hate the technical note-jugglling kind of wankery, but i like the kind that set an atmosphere. I hate showoffy art, it seem so devoid of content and boring
why do you hate marimba so much
t. marimba player
i like Standards better but TNT is still good to me
I actually like marimba very much as an instrument, bit i don't like it when it's used to give that smooth-jazzy vibe like in TNT, it feels kinda obvious and a little bit cheesy.
This are more interesting uses of the marimba imho

this and checked
i almost went to see them live until i watched a youtube video of them and decided it might be boring as fuck. i wonder if i should've gone
first two albums are god tier though
I think the way Steve Reich uses marimba is obvious and cheezy. Out in front. without accompaniment. Just phasing polyrhythms.
