Basically the guitar pictured has different scale lengths - The one there has 25.5-27.5" as its scale. The frets "fan" out to accommodate for this, and since they do the pickups are also fanned/slanted to help the sound stay snappy and not have the bridge sound like a middle pickup.

Pickups also have an effect on sound with where they are placed, these just follow the fan as it continues with scale.

Sounds fine otherwise but not like boomer blues or retro metal. You can make active pickups sound like that though, and you can't make passive pickups sound like actives because they have a much narrower frequency response and less harmonics.
Get blackouts, fishmans, or EMG X if you can or just add more batteries to your existing EMGs if you're poor.

Play an LP shaped guitar before buying one. It may not be as comfortable to you as an SG or Strat. As for the amp I have a fender mustang 1 v2. It's pretty good for trying out different cool effects, although you may find that as you get better at playing you want your effects to come from pedals and only really need a "clean" tone from the amp.
