currently listening to this album for the first time and all I can say is this:
why DO people shit themselves for this soft-rock dronefest?
Currently listening to this album for the first time and all I can say is this:
because muh mysticism muh anti authority muh acid dmt self actualisation lol they did a song about arsefucking lol hooker with a penis but its all so deep actually they used the fibbonacci numbers i feel clever listening to it
I know this is a stale pasta but
>muh acid dmt
if something is only good when it's high, then it's not good
I don't quite shit myself for their music but if you can look past the tryhard-intellectual fuckfest that is tool's fan base I think it's a nice album
must suck having adhd
But... But.... look at all the eyes on the cover.... It must be sooo deep....
Right?
"Dude. Hallucinogens."
>MJK- "The fibonacci thing is embarrassing, I could do better than that"
>bases the new logo and album cover on being a representation of the sequence.
what did he mean by this?
It sounds good and Danny Carey is an excellent drummer
Same reason people still shit themselves over the Beatles and other shitty bands - they have shit taste :)
>for the first time
there is the problem, once you've listened enough of the genre and enough times Tool's music you'll then realize there were very few things quite on their level.
>metal as a whole
>being on any level of good
Not even Tool is an exception. Metal only starts to transcend with stuff like Voivod.
They are good too but now it comes down to personal preference and I think Tool has transcended more with a more recognizable style and with better composition, and by that I don't mean the Fibonacci shit and time signatures, I mean timing, build ups, pacing, etc They get out a more emotional product if that makes sense.
>OMG DUDE! The brain spells out GOD!!!! God is literally a figment created by and existing only within the brain!!! That's so fucking deep bro!!! And they literally drew it, heheh wow! *hits bong*
undertow and aenema are better introductions to tool than lateralus
>waaahhh, people like something I don’t and I feel excluded: the thread
I find this album boring and I’m hardly a Tool fan but this is classic Yea Forums embarrassing itself yet again.
It's actually the top chakra and when you activate it you realise that we are all universal creators (gods), that largely create the world's around us and the perception of that world.
This is in keeping with Carey's esoteric beliefs and a lot of the other themes surrounding the band and music.
such as making up blatantly obvious bullshit to bait easily led retards to believe everything they've heard, no matter how spurious. If there's any theme to Tool, it's making up your own mind and thinking for yourself
>"Jambi" is an Indonesian Province in Sumatra, which was once part of a powerful kingdom with a rich sultan who lived an opulent lifestyle. The setting reinforces the message that family and friends are more important than wealth... which is a great interpretation, but it turns out that this song was inspired by the kid's TV show Pee Wee's Playhouse, which had a genie character named Jambi. At a drum clinic in Kansas, Tool Drummer Danny Carey explained that when Justin Chancellor came up with the bass part, Carey thought it sounded like Jambi's chant on the show: "Mekka-lekka hi mekka hiney ho." Lead singer Maynard James Keenan wrote lyrics about a genie and making wishes, and the song was born. While it could appear to have deeper meaning, Carey claims it was simply a joke.
I definitely prefer Voivod. As dark and foreboding a lot of metal tries to be, a group with a mastery of dissonance like Voivod sure is fucking rare. You'd think such a technique so complimentary to metal's atmosphere would be more prevalent. For Tool, I don't hear anything aside from an alt metal band once you take away the pretentious mysticism surrounding their music. That being said, being alt metal is exactly why Tool would appeal more than Voivod to most people. It's not so much that Tool is transcendent as they simply are more accessible. Voivod is the one who actually experiment enough to break out of metal's genre boundaries. This is supported by how Voivod is devoid of all the pseuds that infest the Tool fanbase; great but inaccessible music filters out plebs and pseuds.
OP here, I'd already listened to both of those
I even have Undertow on CD, because my uncle gave it to me from his old collection
I don't care about ''plebs'' and ''pseuds'' and popularity, I'm talking just about the music.
Also by saying that when listening to Tool you only hear another alt metal band I can tell I've heard 10 times more Voivod who you claim are an inaccessible band(not) than you have listened to Tool
Why are all you zoomers hating on this album lately. It's objectively a classic
one thing I have to say about Lateralus, when I first bought in back in 2001 *crack* *sip* the chemical smell of that plastic booklet has stayed with me for all time. A pure, nostalgic qualia. And very rare to ever experience media in such a multi-sensory way.
>Yea Forums is too stupid to understand music that isn't in 4/4
I liked Lateralus before I even knew about time signatures. Elitist posers like you are why everyone hates Tool and their fans.
>listen to Tool
>get the urge to listen to Isis instead
I didn't mean to imply that you had to have a sufficient understanding of music theory to enjoy the album. Lateralus is unique because its rhythmic complexity, but that can be observed without understanding how time signatures or subdivisions work. Only people with no sense of rhythm at all (like OP) would call it a "dronefest."
>dronefest
it's a meme you dip.
Only Basedboys get turned off by the Tool
dream theater > tool
everybody claims that Tool fans are these fart sniffing losers claiming to be more intelligent than other musics fans, but I never met these people. Met plenty of wankers who love shitting on Tool from their parapet of liking extremely dumb shit like Dillinger Escape Plan and Devin Townsend though.
that's pretty gay dude, you enjoyed Tool being inside you
Why is Devin Townshend "extremely dumb shit"?
Oh, they exist. They just got their asses handed to them for being pretentious douches they hide out in smaller forums now. And I say that as a long time Tool fan - SOME of the fanbase needs to go fuck themselves.
putting it as an example, much like Tool, that there is a legion of fans who don't recognise the piss take humour and take Strapping Young Lad too seriously. Much like MJK went into Puscifer, Devon went and did Ziltoid etc to be more literal in them being able to have a laugh
cringe
This whole thread is full of low quality bait
It's the Bitches Brew of Metal/Alternative. Some get it, some don't.
But it's good when you're high. L M A O
the drummer and bassist are pretty good
Voivod all the way.
No fucking match. Not even the same planet.
