Thoughts on Sampling?

No thought originates in your head. It's all sampled

>allow me to “sample” your song

Fantastic way of repurposing music to create something new when done right. Vocals and lyrics especially can be given a brand new context in creative ways. Those 3 albums, Endtroducing especially, are all brilliant.

>mfw someone says since I left you is “instrumental hip hop”

its stealing and should be frowned upon
any artist caught pirating samples and including them in their own """work""" should not be allowed to make a single dime

>sampling is stealing
No, it's not, if used right, it can be re-purposed to bring on another meaning.

the only meaning to be had is "i can't play any instruments or write my own material"

People pretend it's a really great way to make art, but I haven't heard anything that's convinced me of that. It is mostly laziness, but I don't think it should be illegal. Plunderphonics is more interesting in concept than it is in practice

No you faggot, it's about taking something and re-purposing it. Like when someone does a cover of a song, if you're doing a 1 to 1 cover, then it's lazy, but if the band does it in their own stile, it changes the meaning.

sampling is stealing...
create ur own fucking work. lazy hacks.

i hate (c)rap music
sampling is stealing and bad
drive car in mom pussy

I just don't get shit like Negativland.
It sounds like a mishmash of bullshit with no point. I can't get into it.

> t. hasn't listened to endtroducing

Not that guy but I've listened to Since I Left You, Wildflower, and Endtroducing and he's right. These albums just aren't cohesive enough to be memorable. They don't have substance, it's just a bunch of beats scrappled together out of other songs and pieces of media, which is cool conceptually, and undoubtedly takes a lot of effort (moreso in the tape loop days) but isn't really an enticing enough gimmick to hold an album together on it's own. Since I Left You, the definitive plunderphonics concept album, gives up on its "this is what a party feels like" concept after the first half.

Not a bad thing in theory, but Endtroducing almost made me rethink my positive opinion on sampling

this sampler sucks it only plays gay old shit and it's super lofi

im not that big of a fan but since i left you is both objectively the best australian album of all time and in the top 5 electronic albums of all time.

Agreed, I love the original zomba version

>Hating End
Pleb

It is though.

>Since I Left You, the definitive plunderphonics concept album, gives up on its "this is what a party feels like" concept after the first half.
Since I Left You is not plunderphonics.

Yes it is

Just because it uses sampling doesn't make it plunderphonics.

>35,00 samples
It's plunderphonics.

So? Number of samples doesn't determine if something is plunderphonics. John Oswald has even made some plunderphonics track with just two samples.

It doesn't just use sampling, it consists entirely of samples.

What, in your eyes, makes something plunderphonics, and why isn't SILY a member of the genre?

So? Most instrumental hip hop is made entirely out of samples. The same goes for tape music, musique concrete and sound collage, yet none of those are plunderphonics. You are implying Pierre Schaeffer is a plunderphonics artist here, and that's pretty much retarded.

Just listen to John Oswald or assess my comment above, as burden of proof is on proving why SILY would be plunderphonics.

>instrumental hip hop
Not a genre bye

this is why it should be illegal to cover someone elses song. fuck rock music

Can be done tastefully and skillfully to great effect. Unfortunately most hip hop niggers like Kanye utterly fail at doing so and usually just steal a recording and pitch shift it up or down, then speed or slow, drop sampled drums, etc.

SiL is not instrumental hip hop, tape music, musique concrete or sound collage.

Nyquist was pretty dope

>The Pixies don't sound like Chuck Berry so they're not rock

Has potential, but the vast majority of “””artists””” that use it are lazy and fail to use/innovate the techniques pioneered by Reich and Cage.

>Can be done tastefully and skillfully to great effect.
I agree with you so fa-
>Unfortunately most hip hop n_ggers like Kanye
Yikes

the image contains examples of uses of sampling, what do you complain about?

t. retard who can't tell the difference between rap and hip hop

It is instrumental hip hop. Listen closer.

They are rock because they make music in the tradition that followed rock and roll, out of which Chuck Berry was a main exponent.

Thoughts on pre-manufactured instruments and recording software?

Kanye sucks shit though.

Are you talking about virtual instruments and sample libraries (choir, orchestra, piano, etc.)?

Yes, but you should also make your own instruments from scratch.

who gives a fuck if it's stealing or not? is it good art?
who gives a fuck if it's lazy? why try to know how much effort the artist applied to his work, when we could evaluate the work itself instead?

>What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun - Ecclesiastes 1:9

As long as the track recontextualizes the sample it's fine
