Really, there seems to be the notion that this guys (talking about BNE era) were just a bunch of hacks with a hot chick on front. Only from the unplugged I can already say "what?". Zac is frankly a top notch drummer, his playing in Careful is bonkers. Jeremy was obviously pretty solid but damn, Josh and Taylor are so incredibly competent. I'm a touring guitarist myself and I am amazed with their playing at the unplugged, they didn't miss a single pick stroke. Truly fantastical MUSICIANS, even if they weren't playing anything particularly technical. The creativity of the acoustic arrangements separating the two guitars between just chords and just main melody lines was also perfectly done.
But what I want to talk about the most is their songwriting. Really, I don't know to what extent their producers had an influence over the composition and arrangements, but assuming that this guys came up with everything on BNE by themselves, I have no shame in calling them geniuses. The instrumental break in Careful, Hayley's own capacity for voice leading (though I don't know if she figured out the melodies by herself or Josh wrote them), the jazzy bridge and the outro on Turn it Off, the chords with tensions on The Only Exception (they could have gone easy and put natural chords but they were intelligent enough to put altered relatives instead)... AND the guitar arrangement in Misguided Ghosts, that song is to me the true testament of Josh and Taylor's inventiveness as guitarists. This album was fucking earcandy, all the songs beautiful.

Wouldn't say BNE was particularly good or their stuff following it but they suffer from a bad choice of singles it seems and lately there's only like what, two members left? So obviously shits hitting the fan.
They brought this upon themselves by going with poppy singles and hiding their better stuff. Most aren't aware of their other songs because they get no real exposure.

op, you should definitely listen to their 2 albums made after bne: paramore and after laughter. case in point: youtube.com/watch?v=yw-RPm1uOM4 this is top quality drumming, songwriting, vocals, etc.
it's the case with paramore, though. say what you want, but they made so many great songs and hayley vocals are top notch and emotional. what's not to like about them?
