clairo's dad was an affluent advertising guy who paid for clairo's vid to "go viral". afterwards, the fader monopolized coverage of her and since all music writers know each other the other "indie" sites fell in line.

the most cool and awesome thing about it too is that these artists take the stylistic choices borne of necessity of the bandcamp kids you're talking about and become famous from it because they have the money and connections to do so, and then act like they're just another random kid who just stumbled into fame.
