OP here, forgot to mention country and flamenco as well. Basically most genres associated with guitar, I'm looking for some inspiration in unlikely genres/styles

Go back to making beats on your iPad, zoomer.

All that’s left at that point are funk, disco, Motown, RnB. Unless you have a problem with those too?

put your guitar into a different tuning, guarantee you'll come up with some weird shit

But the unlikely genres are all subgenres of stuff you name. Check out American Primitivism if you want more experimental innovative type stuff.

Robbie Basho, Jack Rose, Glenn Jones, Sir Richard Bishop, Bill Orcutt

Compleatly agree. Open G and Open D, capo to 2nd fret becomes Open A and Open E, respectively. Between those 4, DADGAD, Double Drop D, and other odds and ends like Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell or CSN tunings, you have some things to play around with. Avoid Keef Riffs in Open G.

difference is OP's question has some answers

The guy who played on Moisture by The Residents

M shadows

There’s a lot more piano on rock than you think man

This is just free improvisation. What makes it "american primitivism"?

The difference between your request and OP's is that yours actually exists.

Surprised that electronic music doesnt seem to be mentioned. Edgar Froese and Heldon for example have electric guitars in their progressive electronic albums.
