Later albums leaned too much in Phil's favor IMO, which I think is a big reason things went sour between him and the brothers

I'm extremely left wing, I'm half-Jewish, and I'm anti-racism, and I can't really judge Phil Anselmo the way I would judge most other musicians if they pulled the shit he pulls. For one thing, he's always had serious emotional issues, and all his racist, violent, and other stupid moves always seem to happen when he's in a really bad place mentally or with drug addiction/alcoholism. At his core he seems like a really good guy regardless of all his personal problems, and it definitely endears him to me that he always promotes great underground bands like Eyehategod, Crowbar, Corrosion of Conformity, and Black Flag.

There's a difference between having some racist attitudes, and actively promoting fascism. Drunkenly trolling hecklers by seig heiling, and then apologizing profusely for it, is a world away from promoting white supremacy. I think he probably needs to work on certain racist attitudes, but it's obvious that he knows that, and that's what makes him one of the good guys.

I think he's a gigantic douchebag as a person and politically, but I also think he's made amazing music both solo and with The Smiths. While I think a lot of his stuff is amazing, I also think a lot of it's mediocre, so despite being really good, I still think some of his stuff's overrated. So, very different than Anselmo - where I give Anselmo a pass because of all his personal issues, I make no excuses for Morrissey because he is a douchebag, but that doesn't change the fact he's written a lot of really great songs.

Wasn't Phil in a different part of the country during the recording of Trendkill? Agreed that Cowboys is the best post-glam album though, although I'm convinced that the "groove" slowed down bullshit was all Dime (look at Damageplan and Dime's guest appearances on Anthrax's worst albums compared to Down or Superjoint).

You could be right, but I just always felt like the band moving in a more hardcore direction had more to do with Phil because he (mostly) stopped doing much melodic singing and the halford esque wailing, and the fact that Dime and Vinnie seemed to take the whole "hardcore" image less seriously, like you still had dime always paying tribute to his old influences by wearing like Kiss shirts and shit meanwhile Phil would always play up the fact that he was into punk and underground stuff first and foremost, this is all just pure speculation on my part of course.
