There are tons of different opinions on Kanye. Some people think he is mentally challenged, and others see him as the second coming of Christ himself. What is your personal take, user? Is he a genius? Do you like his music? Do you like his personality? Do you like that he does things his own way? Do you hate his ego? Do you hate the way he uses politics to boost his fame? I wanna hear everyone's personal take if they want to share it. Also, have a nice weekend.

Yes Yes Yes Yes No Not Really

I really enjoy his music, but I don't look upon him as a god or anything. he has also acknowledged that he is bipolar. which I feel is the reason for his eccentric behavior.

probably the single best artist of the decade, really no direct competitors honestly in terms of consistent oeurve

he is also probably the single most interesting lyricist of our time as well (altho mark kozelek is right up there too imo), and hes helping to progress the beginnings of metamodernism in a musical context

i think he's a genius when it comes to production, anyone who's mixed and mastered a record before would agree. ye doesnt always mix and master his records but when he does the technician literally doesnt have to do anything, ye writes his music and mixes shit effortlessly. he's not a great rapper, but he's a genius producer and a damn good salesman
also pablo is his opus

sorry i meant when he doesnt mix*

Kanye is a genius. I don't even think his music necessarily always portrays this too well, but the man himself is a genius. He sees what he wants and he gets it. Everybody needs a bit of Kanye in em

He’s not a genius but he’s definitely talented and tries to make something unique which is itself unique in the hip hop community where no matter if lyrical rap or trap 99% is extremely generic

Not bad music as such, just really boring and generic. Sort of he same way I feel about Neutral Milk Hotel. I don't see how people can listen to Kanye and think of it as anything other than generic radio pop. I guess it might sound groundbreaking if you're ony comparing it to top 40 music, but when you start comparing him with even slightly off the radar artists like Bon Iver or Death Grips it seems ridiculous to call him experimental or a genius or anything like that.

i mean you talk about boring music and then you just posted Mezzanine
if you weren't a twat you would have posted Blue Lines or Maxinquaye

or post something by tricky instead

He has some excellent and some extremely poor music.

MBDTF (and the single Runaway) is well-done production-wise and musically and had a huge impact on the modern day pop/rap scene as well as being quite expressive.

On the other hand, ye, I Love It, and The Life of Pablo are completely unoriginal, poorly produced, and low-quality from both a lyrical and musical standpoint, and next to worthless.

Everything else he's done is somewhere in between.

Metamodernism is just some bullshit people came up with because they can't face the fact that we've pushed everything we invented during the 20th century tech/culture boom to it's logical conclusion and all that's left is a movementless void where there's nothing new left to create.

I'm trying to prove a point, not just post the most obscure trip hop album I can think of. Do I win now if I namedrop DJ Shadow or UNKLE? I notice you've glossed over Portishead there too, that's like -50 triphop points.

Tricky isn't even that good, Maxinquaye is basically just an album of Massive Attack demo tracks. I mean, do you really think that Overcome is better than Karmacoma?

Hell is Round The Corner is fucking sick tho fair play.

both, obviously.

Heather Duby and Laika both deserve to be mentioned as well

Kanye was ahead of the curve with TCD and LR. 808s is when I started losing repsect for him because it was album full of auto tuned crying but then MBDTF came out and restored his rep. Anything he has released after that is usually riding the wave of whatever's popular. Anything he says in the media is just for attention.

I dont really like his music (besides his more popular normiecore stuff) but his intense arrogance and crazy antics entertain me, so in my book he's based, redpilled, and Yea Forums-approved. He also seems like a genuinely OK dude. I think it's funny how he was 10 years too late to the whole "blood diamonds" thing but still released that song anyways.

Hold my Liquor is the best hip hop song ever

Kanye is the most interesting personality in the mainstream hip hop/pop space to me. He's both thoroughly commodified as a personality both by himself and the mass media but also someone who sometimes professes a serious anti-commercialism which peaked with Yeezus (although that was a greatly contradictory album on that level) which is then reabsorbed and shit back out by the commercialist celebrity obsesses media, nullifying any real message it may have. He's an odd case, like a character from a GTA game in real life.

I like his music but not overly so, he's certainly an artist but aspires for heights he may not understand are totally outside of his reach considering his position. The one thing I HATE about him is advertising campaigns that he does when he deliberately stokes outrage to market himself and his albums, it's gross and unnecessary and manipulative, and I'm unconvinced that "that's just how he is", I think it's a put-on most of the time and nothing but a cynical marketing strategy.

Overall: good music, strange and intriguing personality, infuriating and contradictory authenticity.

Shit Heather Duby is really fucking good thanks for the recc. Reminds me a bit of Art School Girlfriend.

Realtalk, chatting shit on Yea Forums and baiting people into one upping you is the best way to find new music

he is 100% a genius in terms of marketing, media manipulation, and production

Idk what you've listened to by her, but Post to Wire is my personal favorite

Pop-art, reality TV, hyper-performative, celebrity meta life and outstanding musical output. Kanye explores the world through the ugly realities of duelling dark forces, intense creativity, overwhelming ecstasy, fame, satanism, christianity, vanity, race, politics, corruption and contradictory capitalist / expressive dynamics. Kanye moves through all the extreme poles of human / God-like moods: the stratospheric highs and catastrophic lows. He covers very little middle ground and everything is expressed with extreme feeling 110%. Binary is contextually essential to understanding his entire performance / life / artistic output. It is also essential to understanding this strange chaotic dimension we have each been unwillingly thrust into, in accepting the overwhelming beauty of the nothingness stimulation. When we accept emptiness, we can see that there is truly exceptional varied colour wide eyed and also devastatingly divine infinity in all-consuming darkness.

There are several types of Kanye fan, virtually everybody has an opinion on him, and I am certainly among that unique bunch you would call a hardcore fan. And, although this Yeezy season has certainly tested that obsessive extreme fandom, I feel it has also simultaneously 110% solidified mine and many others' feelings of immense respect and love for Kanye West as both a musician and outrageously expressive human being. I think quietly and uniquely, Kanye has helped even bring people together a little more with his interesting, if poorly executed, political questions and ideas. I like to think that he has perhaps encouraged many to reconsider the need to fight in this modern war-like age we are living in, when honesty, mutual respect, understanding and ecstatic love feel so wholesome and pure and human. We are losing this core ability to feel and Kanye begs us to find that which has been suppressed for so long, this immense well of emotions hiding deep inside.

Lots of Good Opinions™ in this thread. I feel like there is variety in opinions, yet I see the points made and can agree with lots of this, be it negative or positive. Personally do like him alot but my taste is far from good so I'm not really the right person to judge. Anyway what I was trying to say is that I appreciate the answers, especially everyone who put some effort into explaining their views.

lmao

I like him, I like the ego because he has the ability to back it up. I like how he has the ability to control the media narrative on a whim. I like the confidence and larger than life persona, he's not afraid to be brash and proud of his ability, which is something that you don't really see with popstars in the post-Cobain era after he made it cool to be the reserved anti-rockstar type. Kanye reminds me of that larger than life rockstar persona of old.

he's very talented and im still fucking waiting for the album that was supposed to come out last fall but instead he dipped to africa

hasn't been good since late registration
