It really depends on how expensive you're talking really. Before I started playing my dream was to always get a PRS Custom, if I started on a $5000 guitar I'd be to nervous to bring it anywhere so I just settled on a $600 MiM Strat since they're my second favorite guitar.

fuck i'm hyped, what was /gg/'s first serious gear upgrade?
How often do you guys change strings? I just started playing about 3 weeks ago and have been playing for about an hour or two everyday other than when I first started and was doing like 3 hours a day. Is it time to switch them out now I'm starting to see some parts get a little black but it's not grimy like how the factory strings were when I changed those the first day.
Alexander Parker
Just get a form fitted hard case. Pros travel with them and let roadies handle them and their guitars are fine. A lot of guitars are also extremely durable by design, particularly fenders (telecasters especially) and most multi piece neck through guitars.
Evan Barnes
>All these poorfags cant afford hormones and surgery but I can >My chibson will turn me into an anime girl >They just pretend not to want any of it
How long do you apes keep your strings on? Years? I kept the same strings on for 8 months once and played them everyday without them breaking.
Jeremiah Hall
low test: playing gibson to become the anime girl medium-low test: playing gibson to feel closer to your anime girlfriend normal test: playing a fender high test: playing an ibanez because no anime girl to date has played one ultra chad: playing a gibson because ryuko is your favorite girl from love live and you're a true fan not some faggot poser plus slash played one too and he's fucking awsome ps kevin from school stop showing everyone my tumblr you peace of shit
I've had the same strings on my squire for 10 years now and it still sounds great.
Caleb Kelly
Yeah that's true but still $5k on a hobby you aren't completely sure you enjoy is still too much for me, I'd rather spend a low amount to make sure like I did. Now that I know I enjoy it I have a goal to eventually buy one now so it's not bad, I want to get some playing gains and financial gains first.

It's very good to learn bass on, much better than most pieces of shit basses people start on and it'll last you a few years until you feel like upgrading.
Angel Mitchell
Absolutely a man. A woman would do everything to remove all doubt about her gender. BSaster is basically a guy trying to put his career on easy mode by disguising himself as a woman. Look at the insane amount of effort he puts into faking his gender.

Avoid: PRS, Suhr, Tom Anderson, Musicman, G&L, Gretsch
Unfortunately unless you're doing decent sized concerts, it's not worth it bringing the nice stuff out. Most gigs have risks to your gear, the bass player might whack your headstock, you might have to lend it to some asshole who wants to play a song, or worst of all it could be stolen. Most people I know don't often bring out the nice stuff, in fact one of the best keys players I know gigs a 300-400 quid electric piano.
They're irrelevant and have been for at least a decade, you can buy and upgrade a Sheraton to be as good as a 335 for a fraction of the money. I've only played one good Gibson and it was made in the 80s.
John Bennett
Apologies for the late reply. /gg/ sure moves fast these days.
I play nu-blues rock, boomer rock, and fingerstyle (I have a classical guitar for this, but I use the mustang for contemporary stuff).
>how is roland amp? Very good - especially if you have a guitar with single coils. The clean sound is very clear and neutral and I think the amp overall takes pedals really well. The stereo chorus is unique though I don't find myself using it that much. Zero maintenance since it's solid state. It's also very well built.
Cons? It's a solid state and you don't get a natural overdriven sounds if you crank it up. It just gets louder and this thing has a lot of headroom. I guess this is what pedals are for.
I would recommend this amp, it's very good considering the price.
i oil my strings after i play which gives them substantially longer life. i replace my strings when they get unbearably rusty or a wolf note pops up on my E string.
Gabriel Richardson
Do you also oil your tuners? It improves tuning stability.
Nolan Smith
i probably should but im replacing my tuners soon anyway
Carson Jones
If you wipe down the strings after playing they should last a couple of months. Strings shouldn't be turning black, unless they're some cheap chinesium brand, with strange alloys. I've always heard, from my first guitar teacher on, 3 months or 100 hours, whatever comes first. Pros switch out every night (some of them), because...well, because they can. Someone like Slash who's bending the fuck out of his strings every night probably should restring every day, to avoid breaking. You? Don't worry about it, and wipe your damn strings down.
Jackson Martin
I dip my entire guitar in oil, personally. It never goes out of tune, even with the biggest bends. Locking tuners and tremolos are a waste of money.
It also contributes to a really slick and fast playing neck.

I want to get back into electric guitar after a long hiatus. I am almost constantly travelling (I move country every 2/3 months) so it would be nice to have a setup that is decent to learn on the move.
I have a guitar and hard case already, but what I want is a compact alternative to an amp, I am guessing headphones, and maybe something I can plug into my laptop and do some recording. Any suggestions on what achieves this without costing the world.
And does anyone have tips for frequent travel with an instrument?
Kayden Ramirez

Christopher Young
>look up pussy hats >women fighting for feminism by wearing cat ears
Lol which rich weeb duped them into this?
Vox amplugs actually sound good
The boss katana air is well reviewed but I haven't played one. It's solid state so I'd guess the cleans and effects are good, since solid state effects pedals can be perfectly modeled in software unlike tube amps.
Buy a digital interface (you can get a Behringer 2i2o for $80 or the Scarlett Focusrite which I've heard is a bit more durable for twice that), download Reaper (it's Winrar free). Pirate BiasFX or use any number of free VSTs out there for virtual amp simulators. You'll have pretty much any sound you want at your disposal
Christopher Harris
for recording but not so much for live sound

Thomas Nelson
There's tons of acceptable headphone amps out there. The Orange Micros, the Joyo Minis, the Roland Cube. Smallest that doesn't sound completely awful, is the Vox MV50 - it's solid state but they sound okay.
What are you planning for effects? Pedals? Plug ins? If it's plug ins, just get a good direct box for recording the guitar, and then get some good impulses, you don't need an amp - if you have a decent laptop. If you want to create distortion from the amp, then a tube driven mini amp will be borderline good, all the mini tube amps use the 12AX7 tube for the preamp, that the big boy amps use. How "portable" are you talking, what's your budget, and how much gear aside from the laptop are we talking?
Luis Phillips
Oddly enough this anime girl guitar is the same price as the non-anime girl snappers
Can someone please tell me what makes ESP strat clones so expensive?
Jacob Baker
You explain why you're so triggered by the most popular and best selling basses of all time, first.
PS, "precision" was just to indicate it had frets, as opposed to fretless standup double basses, which it replaced. But keep frothing about things you don't understand.
Brody Powell
every ESP original is hand carved by tone elves from tone, japan, out of tonewood trees grown with tonewater from the tone river. the tone river is the result of a centuries long geo-engineering project that strived to re-route what was once an ordinary river over japan's finest tonerocks, creating premium tonewater, originally used to naturally create polished tonestones for traditional japanese music. the tone-samurai of tone are world renowned masters of timbre.
beware of the cheaper ESPs, now branded E-II. these are made out of lesser tonewood trees watered from the inferior shin-tone river (considered the bare minimum for tonewater) and are not crafted by tone elves in the quiet tonetown of tone.
Luis Fisher
>the most popular and best selling basses of all time McDonald's sells a shitton of burgers, that doesn't mean they taste good. In the music I like, I found that the bassists use a jazz bass. I've watched pbass demos on YouTube, and they were only half as good sounding as the jbass demos. What more do you want? For my opinion to bend to your preference? >PS I took you for a tard who didn't understand what precision meant. I'm about to take you for a tard who thinks bestselling means best sounding, and I'm not hoping to.
Jordan White
I'm in the planning stage at the moment, chances are for 6 months or so, so I'm just going to be focusing on learning (re-learning guitar and music recording), so I just want something that's an improvement on an unplugged electric guitar sound.
They key is portability, up till now I have been travelling with 1 carry-on bag with a laptop, the less extra items/cables/pedals the better, so ideally something I can plug into my laptop.
I doubt I will be bothering with an amp, I move around too much for that and most places I go have good rehearsal rooms so if/when I do join a band I would just be renting the in house gear.
Luke Rivera
pic related, also beware of ibanez. they sparingly water their tonewood tonetrees with tonewater from the yoshitone river, which is cursed by ancient malevolent oni, giving their guitars terrible tone and the unique ability to drain the life energy from the player, making him frail and feminine. it is said that when an esp and ibanez player meet, the esp player is consumed with a desire to slay the ibanez player and free him from his suffering, but does not, for the crime of murder would separate him from his beloved guitar.
t. japanese expert on tonewater, ken yamato (but you can call me ken-sama)
Check out the VOX MV50. There's different models, like a hard rock one, a metal one. Probably perfect for what you need. They're TEENY. youtube.com/watch?v=NAoOKUN8gkc
Luke Gonzalez
love these demos >oh did we mention the boutique pedals we're using? the amp sounds nothing like this.
David Johnson
There was some sperg shilling these in /gg/ a couple of weeks ago. I noticed they had a bunch at the music store so I took a look and they were all complete shit, the build quality is awful. The fretboards were particularly atrocious.
Andrew Moore
Weird, when /gg/ shills something it's usually amazing once you actually try it (ie: gibsons)
David Hughes

basscuck here, also a poorfag mic my $100 amp with my $10 mic, which makes annoying low freq rumbles or buy a $10 shitty dac to direct input into my pc
Aaron Lee
An es335 but it's all solid wood
Jason Taylor
buy a $10 shitty dac. Preferably something a bit better. I got myself Line 6 GX for something like $18 last year. Micing bass with cheap mic is a bad idea in general. SansAmp is an easy and a fast way to get nice mix-ready tones. Or if you're poorfag you can go with Behringer BDI21 (haven't tried it myself tho). Or just use a plugin.

She's incredible when it comes to gear - she's built her own guitars, amps, pedals and is starting to get commissioned by some local bands we know to build pedals for them
When she talks about it to me half of it goes over my head cos I don't understand how they all work and I feel like a big dumb dumb
My magic ass singing Les Paul is a '79, the idea that all 70s Lesters are shit is mostly conjecture. I got mine off a dead guys widow for $400 in 2008 which was the going rate for a 70s Les Paul at the time. Now close to 10 years later my guitar is listed for $4000 all day on eBay, Reverb, and Gbase.
Ask yourself what changed in 10 years and you'll have your answer.

Whats the difference between yamaha FG800M and FG800? price is like 100 bux between. Last one says its new designed and has something called ''scalloped bracing''
Is it worth paying extra 100 for this guitar or should I buy FG800M for 200 bux?
I want my dream guitar to cure me of the cancer I got from reading your greentext
Nicholas Barnes
scalloped bracing just means you have to put in less energy to a make the top move
Colton Perry
Any reccs for transporting equipment? I'm deciding on buying an amp (currently between a deluxe reverb, ac30, and a princeton) and at this point it feels like i'm paying more for it just to weigh less. Trying to find something that would work for carrying a hardshell jazzmaster which is a pretty large case and an extra 60~ pounds in the amp
Ethan Wright
Its bad for a practice guitar? The sound and feel quality isnt better?
Read this, not really worth the extra money for a cheap guitar
Isaiah Howard
all it means is you get more volume with a softer attack. if you were to compare the two in person the scalloped one would be louder if you picked them both with the same intensity. thats the idea behind scalloping braces anyway. but you have to understand this is a wood instrument so each one is going to sound different
Isaiah Clark

What are your favorite exercises for getting your fret hand to play faster?
The only pedal I have right now is a boss tuner since I'm a beginner. In a few months when I get a little better I want to get a boss ge-7 and probably a bd-2w.
Would it look autistic to only have one brand of pedals? How do you tell if your amp sounds good with the pedal if the amp is fairly new so no video of someone playing the combo on youtube?
They all used to be hot. Tim ruined his adorable twink body with all those shitty fucking tattoos. Then they started playing different music and trying to appeal to a broader audience. It ruined them.

Mason Morales
>condor
Caleb Morris
Condor.
Adrian Ward
Vintage as all fuck and it's barely worth as much as a new standard. Really speaks to how beloved these are, but you know guitarists are literal wizards as in they believe in magic and nonsense so they aren't to be trusted.
It also might be the duncans, gibson pickups are prized for being unique (they had broken pickup winders...)
It'll only go up in value when gibson closes its doors. I say buy it if you like them and can afford it.
Austin Peterson
That Burst Color is similar to my Condor copy.
Levi Reyes
it has microphonic pickups. he's screaming into it.
it's considered a massive flaw but indie rock fucks have found a good use for it.
They've been going up a lot in price because people think vintage instantly means its good, 15 years ago you could buy one of those pieces of shit for less than $1000 because it was still in peoples minds on how bad 70s gibson was
Chase Ross
it has five tones: icepicks in your years, hollow and tinny, okay, hollow and tinny, neck with too much treble
compare to the telecaster's three: dat twang, fuller bodied twang, beautiful acoustic-like sounds
Logan Roberts
Telecasters generally sound better than everything else.
csguitars argues for using the tone as a high boost but i've always just used the volume for that, since it already cuts a bit of highs and dampens the sound, and is closer to the bridge for actual on the fly adjustments (you can move it as you pick for more dynamics even).
the tone knob is truly useless. when i want a fatter sound i use the neck pickup.
Lucas Walker
It's useful for painfully bright pickups (Strat-style single coils, EMG 81s)

Just ordered an american pro telecaster
am I a retard who got memed into not buying an MIM?
Luke Diaz
It really depends on the genre, bass is arguably more important than guitar in funk and jazz but in metal and rock they tend to have more minor roles unless they're exceptionally talented
Nathaniel White
yes big time
Landon Parker
Play it when it gets there. If you love the sound, how it feels and looks and you can afford it, why worry about it?
Luis Scott
It's more like a $2000 guitar, a $1000 brand name, and a $5000 "signature limited edition" price hike on top of that.
If you like ESP just get an E-II, and forget snappers, charvels are better.
Juan Ramirez
MIM has looser QC and shittier hardware
By upgrading an MIM to american hardware you do save some money but if the neck isn't great (MIM fenders tend to have less stable necks with the thinner profiles) getting a USA neck would bring the price up to that of an MIA.
Josiah Hall
>supported his own country instead of fucking mexico >did i just get memed?

Replace EMG 81/85 set with EMG 81X/60X set
I feel like you get ripped any time you buy a guitar pre-loaded with EMGs. The better ones are only $9 more from EMG but are normally reserved for guitars that cost $1000 more because "dude, premium".
Anyone want to trade? Lol no, the 81 and 85 are their worst pickups.
Schecter, Dean, and LTD all use the same veneering process where a cheap, mid grade slab of figured maple is sliced into paper thin sheet and pressed onto a top cut out of cheaper maple.
Adam Moore
they do this with every pickup brand, even duncans (you don't want the JB/Jazz? Get your wallet)
guitar cost goes up hundreds, pickup cost goes up $20.
Colton Howard
So many guitars with that pickup set. Didn't they were that bad
Matthew Campbell
newfag here. how do I stop myself from muting the strings when I switch between chords?
Jace Wright
Curl your fingers so they're more vertical above the fretboard and just more practice.
Jose Sanchez
The 81/85 are good for metal but compressed sounding and don't have a lot of headroom.
Their newer models are way less compressed sounding and more like noiseless passives with low-output clarity and high-output punch. Still sterile sounding and mid heavy when unmolested ("clean" into a fender amp set flat like boomers do to test pickup tone), but that's what EQ is for.
Grayson Cox
Ok but thats not foto flame
Carter Perry
Foto-flame looks better than that cheap chink veneer shit.
It feels dirty to spend $218 on pickups. I don't even have a year and a half of experience. I don't play for an audience. I can explain and apply tuning systems better than I can explain and apply chord building. What does it matter?
My guitar bro has an ibanez with that set and it's amazing but it just feels so wrong.
this is true. most serious guitar players who buy non-customised mid-range priced guitars change the pickups and get them changed in during the first visit for set-up. i would go further and say some even get the frets replaced and shaped to preference
Thomas Sanchez
Most serious guitar players know how to set up their own instrument and can tell if an instrument has uneven frets before buying them though so they'd avoid it because who would drop $400~ for new SS frets the first week they got it that makes no sense.
William Anderson
if a guitar that costed more then $500 had even one uneven fret i would send it back
Andrew Morgan
i bought an RG years ago. the factory pick ups were garbage. the dimarzios i put in as replacement were worth more then the whole guitar
Tyler Kelly
Would have to get a different guitar as I am just a shmuck with an Epiphone Les Paul but the dream guitar would be like a Gretsch/Gibson 345. I like the idea and look of F holes and a large body guitar.
Anthony Nelson
its a quality thing. these are sub $1000 guitars, not custom jobs. dropping $800 worth of pickup into them makes a lot of difference
Ryder Gray
I really think that's their best album though.
Blake Foster
>$800 worth of pickup
What the fuck pickups are you buying that cost $800? The most I've spent on a pair was like $190
John Cox
Sell the old ones and recoop some of the cost.
Robert Clark
you're not really getting it
Colton Jones
top dimarzio's are around $200each. x 3 plus labor, new pots, switches as well. i pay a fucker who knows more than me to do it as well.
Josiah Sanders
All pickups should transition to solderless installation systems. There is no reason not to.
>inb4 tone solder
Ryan Reyes
What about those florentine les pauls?
Jonathan Phillips
Is that in BR land or something, plus paying for "labor" to switch electronics is a joke it's literally a 20 minute job for everything all you have to do is watch a video on youtube.
i'm lazy, and not a poorfag, and l dont live in the USA. postage and currancy exchange u know. fuck retail is even worse. sorry for the confusion as i wasnt quoting US$
Elijah Jackson
>Paying someone to wire electronics Dude, learn to solder. It's a usefuk skill
Lincoln Torres
I guess, but learning something basic like soldiering can save you money in the future. I got a 6505+ head for $150 because the guy said it was busted and wanted to sell it and all I had to do to fix it was solder a couple of wires that came apart somehow
Gabriel Nelson
hahaha i know what you mean, but fuck it man. seriously dont mind paying someone, its money in the economy, support small business and all things. i do alright moneywise. besides i love hanging with techies. i get to see what other cool shit i dont own by visting their workshops (theyre building & repairing). its much better than a music shop & its great networking. i once bought a fender tele off a tech. someone had bought it in for work, never came back left it there & never paid for it, he offered to sell it to me for half its actual value. good deal. you never get deals like that on ebay
Dylan Evans
Got my first guitar today lads. Played about 20 mins of Rocksmith, my index finger hurts and I dont sound good.
How long does this shit take?
Blake James
a while you'll get the hang of it soon enough. don't give up user! it takes time and practice but it's well worth it
Henry Mitchell
Years of practice. Use the justinguitar link at the top to really learn. Rocksmith is cool for playing some songs but it won't teach you techniques as well as he does.
Kayden Baker
ten years
Charles Gray
7 years if daily and more than that if you slack.
Liam Thomas
Guitar, two hours a day, for nearly a decade, if you want to play a basic melodic song smoothly and consistently.
If you just want to strum open chords at a moderate pace and sing then, idk, 2 weeks
Logan Gomez
dick around on a classical if you can get a cheap ass one. the smooth gut strings are easier on your fingers as you develop calluses. i bought one when i started out just to do this. cost me $20
Alexander White
hey man just keep it up, just quickly learn power chords and you can do some easy songs on rocksmith pretty fast - but i don't recommend you using only rocksmith - its a mistake i made. I don't know any scales, or any names of the chords even because I only played rocksmith (my fretting and picking and strumming is all fine but when it comes to theory oh lad not good - or improvising too) defo have rocksmith just as exercise from time to time
Evan Howard
>I don't even have a year and a half of experience So why you feel your long opinions on pickups matter?
Aaron Garcia
Thanks lads! I was just messing around about not being good yet, I know it'll take a long time but I'm having a blast.
Here's a picture of my guitar for you, it's a Fender Player Series strat.
internet newbs have the best opinions on gear. all they've done is listen to other people play so they really know what sounds good and looks cool. if they have gear, unlikely as it is, they're open to admitting that it sucks because they're new and didn't know better before buying it.
pros have the worst opinions because they're probably paid to have them, and if they don't have endorsements they just like whatever they play because they don't want to believe their gear sucks because as an experienced guitarist they should have great taste in gear. never listen to an experience guitarist about gear.
for this reason i get all my gear recs from /gg/ and now i have an awesome rig. i only play bad ozzy covers but people agree that my tone is amazing.
>gibson les paul standard with kaka stuffed in the control cavity >boss katana >no pedals
Dylan Green
You wouldn't be having these problems if you just got a Gibson
Leo Green
best of luck desu if i had gathered all my guitar know-how from Yea Forumsgg i would fucking kill myself. now go off and do another yt tutorial and learn some more bad technique habits
>not in a hardcase guitar newb definitely detected
Ian Powell
It's not a Gibson.
Alexander Perry
>Paying someone to wire electronics >Dude, learn to solder. It's a usefuk skill yep that /gg/ for you
Easton Nelson
Why is G&L bad?
Chase Davis
Bot him but i really doubt hes going to be taking his guitar everywhere and gigging to justify getting one yet. They were extremely important but I hate how fender doesnt give you a case when you're soending almost $700 on a player series. It doesnt even come with a gig bag
Lucas Kelly
It's a shitpost making fun of the brazilian with a dean don't take it seriously.
Justin Foster
Why are there no esp guitars with 24 frets without Floyd Rose?
There are, you just have to pay for a real one and not the cheap ones.
Josiah Martinez
Here's mine. I've only been playing around three years. Wish I had room for a power adapter on here.
Do you move pedals often? You should rewire everything to be underneath the board. Would take this miles (especially that green cord, which would reach better if it weren't jumping over the Bad Monkey's switch)
I like that your patch cables on the bottom are thin.
weird signal path. why not >DS1 >> Small Clone >> DD3 >> Ditto ???
Jacob Mitchell
but would you?
John Nguyen
>and nobody realizes why a new player would be taking their guitar places
Lessons!
Julian Kelly
Just got a board and the DD3, had only been using two at a time before. Haven't really figured out the "hierarchy" yet.
Is there a quality advantage in having the effects pedals (eg, distortion) enter the delay, vs the DD3 feeding into the distortion? I'm all ears if there's a level of this I'm missing.
Samuel Wood
Yes there is, if you put the delay into the distortion, it will compress the repeats. Some people do this but for 99% of people dirt into delay is better

...I'm doing it myself because I want to?
I WANT to work on guitars, for the experience of doing.
Also, I've never even been to Yea Forums until today, when I came to see if they had guitar threads.
