A lot of things by Lil Ugly Mane that guy is so genuine. What comes to my head is Grave Within A Grave:
"Neither angels or reapers or ghosts were fulfilled
Just a cavity to soak up my guilt in my depravity
The flowers up above me wilting down so they can laugh at me
To think we spend our lives convinced we understand agony"
Man With a Helmet also gives me goosebumps when I visualize the story in my head

Hearing Berserk's soundtrack sampled in the modern style of music without so much as a loose relevance to the source material must be what it feels like to get old.
Oh shit, I remember listening to this during my first year in college. I think the remaining member's making music again.
op here, what makes you say it has weak songwriting?
personally, diamond mine and sally ii make me collapse on the floor every time i hear them, though you may be right in that it's due more to the delivery than the lyrics
idk!! it's hard for me to separate one from the other
There's no one song or artist. So, I'll give you a few.

JESUS DGD is so fucking bad. The epitome of ebverything wrong with Post-Hardcore.
Maybe weak songwriting is not the right term. Diamond Mine, Get Disowned and Sally II are great deep cuts.
But this album just doesn't grab me like their other albums. I just like the songs on their other albums more. It's funny the criticisms I can make this of this album can be said of their other albums(poor mixing; Painted Shut, over complicated song structures; BYHOD).
The ending to Pink Cigarette

NO HEROES ON MY RADIOOOOOO
NO HEROES ON MY RADIOOOOOO
i hear you! byhod hasn't really grabbed me yet desu, maybe for that reason
i don't know too much about production tho so i can't speak much to that in general
get disowned holds a special place in my heart, i think, because i first heard it at a point of extreme change in my life, so i'm reminded of that every time i listen
what are your fave songs from the other albums?! happy to see me is my overall favorite, i also love waitress, buddy in the parade, sister cities, somewhere a judge...
Grace - Jeff Buckley. Gentle emotion but you can hear the nuance in his pronunciations
Yeah. Dont really care.
I didn't like BYHOD for the first month either but I grew to love it. Thought it was an odd departure but then I realized that it still sounds like them. They've always had a country twang to certain songs, theres still the big angular solos, and theirs still that rythm heavy indie rock. Theres some great melodies and hooks there too which was entirely worth my respect.
When I say bad mixing, I want to pint out how the bass is buried in the mix on Get Disowned and Painted shut and there are little instrumental pieces like the violins on the bridge for Tibetan Pop Stars which are just barely audible.
Favorite songs are: Waitress Not Abel, The Knock, Well- Dressed, Sister Cities, Look of Love, Painted Shut, Prior Things, and How Simple.
true true! country twang is very apt and is definitely a thread throughout their discog
okay i see what you mean RE: mixing, as a bass enthusiast i should have picked up on that lol
and i never noticed the violins in pop stars!! thank you for pointing them out!
prior things and how simple are EXCELLENT. i love that they're in the same key, it makes the album really fun to loop
you've watched their tiny desk concert, right? have you ever seen them live? what song would you kill to hear them do? to my knowledge they've never done diamond mine at a show so that has my vote
>you've watched their tiny desk concert, right?
I've seen thier Tiny Desk Concert. Tbh never a fan of any Tiny Desk Concert but they sounded pretty good for the all acoustic route.
>have you ever seen them live?
I have seen them live in LA back in 2018. Got a couple records(should've picked up Freshman Year while I had the chance) and shirts signed. Crowd was really into it for an Indie Rock concert. Not suprised desu because they've always had big anthemic hooks in their songs. Had the chance to see them again a couple months later but didn't go. Kind of regret that, but I was burned out on their albums at that point.
>what song would you kill to hear them do
I really wanted to hear them do Sally II desu but I knew that wasn't going to happen. Also, i'd like for them to reissue their old albums. Go for a ridiculous amount on discogs.
Oh I got front row too at that concert.
>Tbh never a fan of any Tiny Desk Concert
Did this nigga really say desu and not have it filtered?
There and Back Again by Twilight Force.
Really that album is perfected Power Metal in my opinion. Sad they dropped that vocalist. The new guy is good but here's hoping the new album has the same synergy.
Since were being Hop Along fanboys you can hear the violins clear as day in this video.
that's so cool!! i saw them in ithaca back in 2017 right after BYHOD was released and it was amazing. great crowd, and they had hilarious banter and camaraderie onstage. and then again in asbury park at the end of last year but it was a bit lackluster comparatively, imo
GOD SALLY II WOULD BE AMAZING! i watch the single live video of it (the one from a tiny ass pub in like 2014) almost every day. i sang it once at an open mic night! very special song to me
Foe - Leprous on their album Coal.
WAIT just kidding the first show was also 2018, forgive me

Maybe not exactly what you were asking, but for me it's the backing vocalist in Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" who breaks from the rest. Maybe it's the contrast that she makes with the relatively "subdued" atmosphere of the song, but those small touches of passion can really take you by surprise and instil (in me at least) a bittersweet feeling.
