Everyone is claiming this was a random suicide, but it's clear what was actually happening: his killers were driven to take his life solely for the sake of clout. They wanted infamy of their own and found it in gunning down a 52-year old.

As Dave was taking his final breath, he was surrounded by kids taking video and pictures of him. Why? For clout. No one was taking his pulse, no one was calling 911, everyone was standing around with their phones out as his body was clinging to life.

The moral lesson of David's life story should be a cautionary tale of the horrors of social media and how it's fucked our society beyond belief.

Dude was thousands upon thousands of dollars deep in debt. That was part of the impetus for doing a fully-fledged tour, he didn't particularly want to. He just really needed money.

It didn't even sound like he was leaving his house much either and had retreated from his old social life after the Silver Jews hiatus to the point where even his wife left him. His interviews made him sound like he would never find love again and like someone who was just sort of going through life half-heartedly. Not to mention that he's a recovering addict who attempted suicide before, and his mother recently passed too.

Plus the guy spends a whole year working on his comeback record, to what? Muted hype and being overshadowed by other releases in an era where indie rock is the past and rap and pop music are what critics love.

He probably wasn't gaining as much acclaim or making as much money as he wanted too at all. Look at those tiny ass venues on his tour itinerary. FFS man, the "Duck Room" at Blueberry Hill is right near Wash U. It's a tiny stage by a bunch of tables in what is otherwise a normal restaurant. You get like 75 - 200 people in there max. It was where an elderly, out of tune Chuck Berry would routinely play impromptu shows for fun in the last few years of his life (mainly just because he grew up there), but not a serious venue, especially for an artist of David's stature. It's basically the local haunt for all the no-name boomer bar bands who drag their work friends and kids along.

Quite frankly, his album didn't sell enough copies to make the Billboard charts and was streamed ~100,000 times from what Spotify shows. He's probably made less than $500 from those royalties in total mostly from CDs/vinyl sales, probably fractions of a penny from streaming.

Holy hell. I mean, he was telling us what we didn’t want to hear with the Purple Mountains record. I don’t know how many times “Is Dave ok” entered my mind. In fact I don’t think I ever listened to that album (and I’ve listened to many, many times) and not come away with a nagging sense that the kind of honesty he was exhibiting could only lead to one place if not managed by another person.

It may be a suicide note. But we have to look at it with reverence and respect because the man was a great artist. Even if he died of some other cause (I don’t think he did) I’m floored by Dave’s ability to communicate his unfortunate truth, and his ability to be honest with himself and his audience. It’s simply a brilliant album, and what happened changes nothing.
