well the genre is very broad, what really defines it are the aesthetics and the general atmosphere. Crystal Castles always had that vibe, even of they tamed the imagery and pursued their own sound.

Salem, the creators of witchouse, released their first EP on July 2008. Crystal Castles I was released on March 2008, and their first EP was earlier. CC had nothing to do with witchouse up until III and parts of II.

This. I never got too into chiptune, but I distinctly remember people calling shit like Crystal Castles and Anamanaguchi that term. Almost never heard Nintendocore back in '09.

It isn't witch house, at all - but it quite clearly had an influence on it
CC has some pretty dark lyrics but they're more the result of an abused psyche rather than anything relating to occultism, shamanism, ritual and so on.
Also witch house rarely utilises the brighter synths that CC do , and for want of a better phrase are less 'chorousey'. Very few witch house songs have catchy hooks like CC do.

The only real crossover I've seen is Sidewalks and Skeletons remixes and SnS are the most derivative, over the top witch house I've ever listened to.
