It'll take you like 2 weeks - a month to be good enough on guitar to impress people who don't play instruments. All you need to do is learn the basic open chords, power chords, strumming correctly, and arpeggios which is just playing the strings of open chords individually.
That will carry you through the majority of campfire or pop/rock music.
