Can someone teach me to better appreciate this album? I feel like there's something I'm not getting. Everyone talks about how mindblowing the production is but that seems like the one attribute I can't get past because I like Chuck D
Henry Phillips
have you heard many rap albums coming out before and around the time it came out?
Jaxson James
The only 80s rap albums I've listened to in full besides that one are Paid in Full, Straight Outta Compton, Licensed to Ill, and Paul's Boutique, all of which I like. 36 Chambers is prob my favorite rap album ever and only released 5 years later. Tbf I do kinda like Nation of Millions, it just doesn't wow me like it seems to do to so many other people. People mention how detailed and masterful the production is and I'm not sure I'm picking up on all that
Noah Walker
Gavin Ramirez
yeah, I started listening to madlib a good bit before Public Enemy, but once I finally did listen to them I was surprised how similar the technique's they were using
I almost think madlib is a combination of all that abstract jazz rap in the 90s and public enemy style sampling
but point is the way they were creating beats was incredibly influential on nearly every hip hop album to come, including the ones you mentioned. also, Chuck D was using some really complex flows for the time
Aiden Bell
For me atleast, the samples are used in more creative ways than other albums of the time its almost hypnotic plus it sounds kind of futuristic in a way
Nicholas Butler
Monkey "music" for those you can't tell the difference between stealing (some call it "sampling" though) and creating.
Carter Cook

Connor Hall
Yeah I gotta listen to it again then. Do u like it more than Fear of a Black Planet?

the production was superb for the late 80s but it’s basically unlistenable (other than black steel) after being exposed to decades of modern production.

If we are going with production, lyricism, and artistry. East Coast trumps West Coast any day of the week.

such a beta album
Anthony Flores
Nah some things aren't, the east coast definitely had the lyricism but west coast beats and production have always been more complex and superior. Still more complex doesn't always mean better, the simpler boom-bap beats are very pleasant to the ear but a lot of the intricate g-funk sounds are tight as fuck.
