The power trio is the be all end all of rock music. There's something rudimentary and primal about three musicians forming together to become something much bigger than the sum of the parts. I'd argue some of the most important bands were made up of merely 3.

Not really a trio. Red was billed as a trio but every song features either David Cross or other guest musicians, and they never performed as a trio as far as I know.
