no i consider math rock more of the twinkly guitar tapping based stuff it is today, due to bands like don caballero and hella. this is just "post hardcore" with odd time signatures

that's the second wave of math rock. the early bands had a bit of a metal edge and played more riff-based music. even don caballero's first 2 albums are pretty metallic. they were all influenced by helmet, who definitely are not math rock but popularized the whole thing of hardcore bands playing in different time signatures. so i'd say they have a place in math rock history
