Album of the century, Brian Wilson truly is a genius

this album sucks. every song except the first one sound the same, the harmonies are nothing special (the beatles made better harmonies with Because) and unmemorable

I dare you to hum a melody of any song on the album except for the first and last one. I know I cant. Its so unmemorable

Meanwhile Because by the Beatles? Now thats memorable

Nice try.

If people want to rate it they're perfectly entitled to.

Pet Sounds is the most overrated album of all time, along with Peppers.

>(the beatles made better harmonies with Because
that is the only song they made that comes close to beach boys harmonies and they had to triple track their vocals for 9 voices. it also came out at the end of 60s, after peak BBs.

peppers is actually the most underrated, overrated album of all time

Damn, wish I could go back to when I first discovered this album

Shoyu Sounds

Nice bait

You didnt address any of my points of critique at all

>after peak BBs
a shit band like beach boys doesnt have any peak
all their albums suck

Absolutely BASED rym reviews

Part 1:
Let's start with "B." B is for Beach Boys, who supplied background vocals for this album. B is also for Brian Wilson, whom this album is all about. B is also for "B," the type of record this is - a "B"
album. Finally, B is for bullshit, of which I have heard so much,
concerning this album, over the past 40 years, that I finally did
go and buy it to listen to it.

I have to laugh at what a sucker I was. This is a lackluster, often crappy album which is saved from oblivion by a couple of decent singles. Hailed by BB fans as being on a par with Sergeant Pepper, this album is little more than an hour of whining by a chubby, bespectacled, socially awkward adolescent Brian, featuring the same puerile point of view as on previous BB music, and the same tiring, if distinctive, vocal sounds, BAH-BAH-BAH's and all.

Let's start with the good news. Wouldn't It Be Nice is a genuinely catchy tune, one of the few sources of any energy on the album. Sloop John B is a bit faggy, but presents a nice rich sound and is enjoyable. These two tracks made the top ten play lists upon release, and deservedly so. God Only Knows has a nice hook, and Caroline No is pretty in a strained, contrived sort of way. If memory serves, these two grazed the top 40, also a credible scenario.

It's all down-hill from there. The Pet Sounds track would absolutely be mistaken for a Saturday Night Live spoof of a terrible night club act, had SNL been around at the time. Let's Go Away appears to be Wilson's answer to elevator music, and is just dreadful. The rest is Wilson moaning and groaning about being an adolescent in the pre-hip 1960's. Don't look for any Sergeant Pepper type existential questions on this album -- "wouldn't it be nice if we were married" is about as deep as it gets. A delight for the conservative Christian right, a waste of time for anyone else.

>I dare you to hum a melody of any song on the album except for the first and last one. I know I cant. Its so unmemorable
yeah sorry i didn't address this iron clad argument

The performance of this album on the charts, when released,
accurately reflected the quality of the music. A couple of top 10,
a couple more top 40, but disappointing sales overall, even compared to other BB albums. This is a point BB fanatics have never been able to come to grips with. The album just isn't very good, despite Wilson's self-admiration and attempts at "innovation". Sir Paul (Beatle Paul) did indeed say nice things about it -- but Sir Paul has
rarely in his life not said nice things about anything. (The strongest language Paul could come up with regarding the murderer of John Lennon was: "jerk of all jerks." )

For my part, Good Vibrations -- the BB's best single, is a good indication of what might have been, had Wilson's talent been nearly as big as his ego. Still, to assert that this album could in any way, on any level, come close to being comparable to Sergeant Pepper is just a daydream, to which I can only say: "wouldn't it be nice?"

listen to classical music, it's alright

literally do and find Pet Sounds infinitely more moving

SMiLE is literally better in every way.

>deep existential questions
>on Sergeant Pepper's

I giggled for a moment

Your critique is that your memory is bad as well as not being able to recognize a strong melody.

people who come into this album expecting sgt pepper levels of forward thinking musical concepts and production are always disappointed. this is an album full of wonderful melodies, backed by cathartically stunning baroque instrumentation. classic

>company sabotages your release because it wasn't as commercial as surf music
>"haha you didn't sell as many as the Beatles :)"

There isn't even a need to defend Pet Sounds against inane lines of argument anymore since the proof of its influence is in the pudding. George Martin drew influence from it. Robbie Robertson, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Roger Waters, Bowie, Elton, and anyone associated with the California Sound all owe a debt to it. You can shit on them too if you want but they're in the same pantheon of Boomer music that the Beatwifles were in so it would be self defeating and call into question just what music you consider good

Pet Sounds was inspired by Rubber Soul though

>Robbie Robertson, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Roger Waters, Bowie, Elton
So it influenced nobody worth of esteem? Also who the fuck is Robbie Robertson lmao

I'm aware, though less so than is often implied. As far as I can tell Brian basically just liked the idea of a cohesive album with consistently high quality songs, there aren't really that many sonic similarities between the two

Even Sgt. Pepper's sounds different from Pet Sounds in fairness

listen to it again

>doing exactly what I predicted

What music do you listen to then queer bait

Mainly Robbie Robertson

Good choice.

best album by brian wilson. the rest is up for debate.

>Album of the century
Name 3 albums from every decade of the 20th century that you've listened to within the last 3 years.

Firstly Smile wasn't realise last century retard, secondly I'll admit if Smile was finished and release after pet sounds then yeah it would've been the better albhm
