I'm generally not a fan of the term 'wank' as most of prog is still nuanced and well thought stuff from talented musicians like any other. Wankery does apply to things like Keith's keyboard showboating though. Wank prog is indeed bottom of the barrel but at least it still entertains.
I feel like DT wanks alot too. They play their instruments with a lot of technical skill but I never actually found their songwriting great. Their songwriting is more of a lyrical thing rather than song arrangement. Few prog bands pull off lyrics well to me (just look at neo prog); but that's also because prog tends towards being instrumentally focused and I think it is better off that way.
Everyone should like their prog with good songwriting; and thankfully, the majority of prog does fit in the third category you mentioned. Prog that conflates good songwriting with being overly focused on lyrics tends to be the most boring kind of prog (far moreso than wank prog); its an issue that is quite prevalent with modern prog (alot of it was derived from neo prog so not surprising).

DT clone? Its more that that they all try to emulate Genesis too much. I don't find these Poles particularly engaging either. Their use of keyboards in atmosphere is far superior to anything DT can pull off but I'm too spoiled by classic prog. I will always prefer the tendency for classic prog to take from jazz and psych rock compared to modern progs tendency to take after Genesis and metal music.
Modern prog is at its best when straying away from a neo prog/ symphonic prog style.

So I've been told by many many people but I've never heard the resemblance. Is it something about the rich multilayered keyboard work that makes people say theyre Floyd influenced?
Floyd doesn't have a monopoly on spacey keyboard sounds and imo what Riverside does with keys is far beyond Floyd.
I didn't pick up on the Pink Floyd influences in Voivod's Nothingface either (aside from Astronomy Domine); but funnily enough, SBB (also Poles) do stand out to me as very Floyd influenced.
And thanks, I'm much more appreciative of keyboards than I was the last time I listened to Riverside, I'll give their discography another listen.
