I think Metallica booted him because they felt they got what they needed from him, they took from him in terms of style and attitude like "yeah, that's the ticket" then kicked his ass to the curb because they knew they would have to fight him for power and dominance and possibly lose it if they kept him around as they got big. Lars is a pretty strategic kind of guy.

So Dave's story goes something like

>then one day they woke him up in the morning and said he was out of the band
>they had his things packed and told him his bus departs in an hour

>James drove him to the bus station
>they didn't speak

Dave was a retard from the start so why did they wait for the worst possible moment? Why didn't they confront him directly? Why did they treat him like shit after that?

Old fag here, and Bay Area old fag. Everything I've heard over the years is the same story that's out there - Dave was an asshole, worse when drunk, and they snapped in Rochester and fired him. Never heard a single different version from anyone who was close to or associated with them back then.

Yeah, but I mean if that was the case they could have done it at any time, they clearly kept him around while knowing he was a problematic drinker, they didn't fire him until some heavy thinking went on.

The worst things he did happened at an earlier time than when he was fired, so for a while they were presumably fine to have him on board despite electrifying their old bassist and other asshole things.

It's just weird that they "snapped" shortly before they started recording. Did he do something? Did his behavior change somehow?
And they clearly had it planned out. It's not like they suddenly felt they've had enough and told him to fuck off. They schemed behind his back. They even had a replacement ready "by a recommendation of their producer" according to some Wikipedia article if I recall correctly.
It's just weird that thereafter they always acted condescendingly and dismissively towards him.

Bump and it's not about whether he was an asshole or not. He clearly was but that doesn't explain why they acted the way they did.

1)they knew that Hammett was going to join
2)they knew that they could get away with taking his music

I also wonder what these alleged asshole things are. Other than the electrocution the other worst thing he seems to have done is punch James once.

How about non-Dave perspectives. Because as I said if what he says is true then even if he was kind of insufferable what they did still makes them look kind of like assholes.

I just don't want to buy too much into Dave's Jesus-marthyr act but at the same time I don't want to dismiss him just because he is a retard.
Can you give source for what you are saying?
I can make up enough excuses for Lars and James but I can't know if they are true or not. Also my general impression is that their subsequent behaviour has been kind of passive aggressive, always acting like they are so above it all.

Sources for Lars and James? They have never (to my knowledge) spoken about it on the record, but they have never contradicted Dave either(TMK)
The timing for the firing could be coincidental with meeting with Hammett in NY I guess, my thought is that after the fight about the dog they kept Dave until then because they needed a guitarist

Dave is like "lol I'm such a jerk" but he is also like "lol it's just my personality why is everyone being so mean to me nobody understands mee". But I'm partial to Dave too which is exactly why I'm trying to be more objective.

For what it's worth too, there are Kluxers/Neo Nazis out there who swear that James used to be their pal and was into all that shit back when he was younger. There is no actual proof (Inb4 someone posts the sieg heil pic which let's be honest isn't proof of shit) but it's there.
