Redpill me on Dream Theater.
My friend who's currently studying at Berklee says they're the best band ever existed
Redpill me on Dream Theater
The only people I’ve met who are dream theater fans have autism or don’t shower and have really bad social skills. It’s progressive butt rock so it’s audience is right in the middle of wannabe boomers and neck beards.
Awake is their best album and anyone who says otherwise is wrong
he's pretty chad and had girlfriends throughout whole life so dunno
fucking based
Sorry no
He's a pseud

They have some good albums but I'm sure your friend is one of the annoying people who goes on endlessly about "blah blah prog is so high iq plebians don't get how great this 11/8 beat with sweeping arpreggios in the key of Am is". Anyone who declares a band the best ever is usually really annoying like that

My mom likes dreamtheater. I guess they're ok
pic of mom please ?
buncha supremely talented hacks. Complexity for the sack of complexity.
They're not but you either automatically love them like me or hate them and think Labrie sounds gay. Also some people have said "Dream Theater is music for people who like listening to instruments" which even though that was an insult to the band it's really true because if you don't like listening to instrumental interludes that to on for decades you'll probably hate them, and that's totally ok. Some people dislike the singing, I don't. He's rough live especially nowadays but on the albums he's fantastic most of the time. Really I implore you to just form your own opinion and try 2 or 3 albums from their two best decades, the 90s and 2000s.
>They're not
possible contenders ?
Can't stand listening to their albums, but seeing them live is a different experience.
I was looking at Jordan's sheets of music, it was quite entertaining.
they are wankers, you can't deny that
also, it makes sense beacause they were berklee students afterall
Probably my favorite band of all time, with decades of very good music. James labrie has a very unique and polarizing voice which turns alot of people off but that's fine. Pigeonholing their stuff into "progressive rock" doesnt really do them justice as they sweep through genres wildly. There's too much great music in there to dive into but I'm sure you can find something you like.
Aside from that yes, they are some of the greatest instrumentalists alive. Jordan rudess is THE king of rock piano/keyboards right now and has fucking chops, improv skills, sound design, solos, the whole thing. Petrucci is a beast at guitar and while I'm not one to say "x is the best guitar player ever" he is up there with the technical greats for sure.
OOHHHHH IF I DIEEEEE TOMORROOOOOOW
Kevin Moore is the better player for DT
As a keyboard player I have immense respect for Kevin Moore, he's a great player and songwriter. He did good work in the early albums and songs like metropolis part 1. However at the end of the day he just can't keep up with John Petrucci.
Take "Under a Glass Moon" for example. Petrucci wrote a 10/10 blazing guitar solo for the song which is followed by a lukewarm solo on synths which is almost embarrassing to listen to after hearing the insane shredding on guitars. Contrast that with instrumental sections like in the Great Debate, In the Name of God, etc and you can hear two strong players that are much more at the same level of skill
>DT is just random notes hur durr
I hate to use this word to describe music as being good or not, but Moore just had soul. The entire Awake album shows this
what
Jordan Rudess is a regular at the starbucks I work at. He gets a onions chai tea latte. I know who he is but I don't say anything. The man just wants to grab his coffee. I'm sure he'd be cool if I said something but I'm not in a sociable mood when I'm working. Anyway Jordan if you happen to see this Stephen with the bushy hair from Starbucks says whaddup
Why does Dream Theater arouse such strong emotions around here? They don't seem particularly divisive to me.
LaBrie is an objectively good vocalist and people who can't stand falsetto are fucking gay.
They are not the best band ever but they are not horrible and have some good stuff. I used to like them when I was 12 and I am mostly indifferent to them now.
I have no idea what their "fandom" is like and if they have one.
I get that. Take the time is in fact my favorite synth solo from all DT for that exact same reason.
Though at the end of the day as a piano and keyboard player I have to side with Rudess. His technical ability, versatility and depth as a musician are simply second to none. His solo piano work in "notes on a dream" for example is at a level that only highly trained pianists could ever hope to achieve. His symphonic work in SDOIT and yes even in The Astonishing among others are fantastic. If you search around YouTube you can find videos of him just improvising (upright bass, Latin style, jazz, ostinato practices) things on the fly that most could not play even with hard practicing.
I thought dream theater was a type of cheese.
