Why is it that '90s Metalcore sounds so much better than 2000s *core? How did we go from legendary bands like Conviction, Earth Crisis, Stigmata, Integrity, Merauder, Ringworm, Rorschach or All Out War to garbage like Avenged Sevenfold, Shadows Fall, Between the Buried and Me, Job for a Cowboy, Trivium, Bullet for My Valentine or Killswitch Engage?

Did "Slaughter of the Soul" singlehandedly inspire too many shitty bands? It seems to be that popular-yet-controversial albums set the standard for so many others to strive towards yet so many lose sight of what made Metalcore distinct.

90s mealcore is basically 90s post hardcore but heavier and more aggressive, and 90s post hardcore is based. Later metalcore bands had too much influence from poppy melodic albums like Slaughter of the Soul and Relationship of Command

I'm lurking for replies too. Only atmopsheric black metal bands, that I like are Burzum, Ulver and Drudkh. I don't care for those american bands, that feel like indie folk guys larping black metal bands.

I recommend Havukruunu and Draugnim to you. They are not really classified as atmospheric black metal, but pagan black metal, but you'd propably enjoy them. I know, I do.

I'll give them both a go! I can get behind a lot of folk infused black stuff, off the top of my head I like Gallowbraid and Uada.

I think Havukruunu have a really nice guitar tone, kind of raw like early Taake. But Draugnim definitely bring the big fleshed out riffs.

Literally everything. These do not have mediocre albums. Also get the 2 demos of Havukruunu, they are as great as studio albums. Be sure to get extended edition Rautaa Ja Tulta, which has extra tracks. I listened first their newest albums, when I found the both bands.

my golden age for black/death metal is probably '89-'96. Other genres don't really have a heyday anywhere close to how good this period was for these genres

I personally think the production plays huge part of the charm on those records.

In the 80s I feel many of the metal records kinda suffered because well... the guitars etc. some of the stuff sounds a bit too weak. Entering late 80s and 90s you start to get this type of "harsh" tones and stuff, but it was not chiseled to the max.

Most of the studios had their own "unique" sound etc. now it all sounds the same everywhere

I went to lots of gigs years ago but stopped, but from out of 10 bands usually one of them is actually good live band.

Most of my favorite bands sound fucking awful live, it is just the way it is. Maybe it is because I am into music production myself and have been mixing bands and producing stuff in my later years I have become just more critical.

I mean some "massive tones" in the studio are achieved by all sorts of double tracking guitars and all sort of stuff that has nothing to do with live sound, I know it is going to suck. The bands are too loud when it comes to metal too, for example with 95% of the bands the bassist could play literally wrong notes and nobody could tell the difference, not even the people doing the mixing
