It was my dream as a kid and teenager to move there, I never did it and the regret still haunts me
I was born here, don't come here. It's a massive shithole and I hate my parents for moving here from Wisconsin and New York. (New York is probably a shit hole too, though). I'm learning German so I can escape this shithole.
Country Joe & The Fish - Flying High

I don't know man I feel a lot of regret over it
Starcrawler - I Love LA

Then stop whining and go fucking do something about it
Why?
Because it was something that I always wanted to do and never did. When you get older you start to realize your past regrets and the things that you should have done, I gave up on a lot of my goals and dreams at a young age because of abusive parents and I've been fucked up ever since
Soul Coughing - Screenwriter's Blues

Really La isn't that great. If you're going there to be a famous musician or actor it's not worth it. Even if you're not the cost of living there is pretty high and it's difficult for a lot of people to live there
Concrete Blonde - Lost In Hollywood

it's not even worth visiting vacation-wise anymore.
i lived in santa monica for two years right before it went to hell.
2011-2013 (well, three years technically)
I mean if user really wants to go you can find rooms for pretty cheap (east la)at random but they get snatched up pretty quick
rooms are at least $700.00 now. i mean a literal cot shared with 6 other people in a half way house, shared bathrooms, is $700-$800. when i was living in LA (well, santa monica) those types of rooms were $200-$300.
this was literally at the beginning of the decade
$700 for a room isn't bad at all that's literally almost close to where I'm at in prices
Yeah all right but think about the cost of living, the poverty line in California is at $50,000 a year. You could literally live pretty comfortably anywhere else on $50,000 a year
Owl John - Los Angeles Be Kind
An absolute stunner of a song. Scottish song writer moves out to LA and finds it to be very isolating and harsh for him to adapt to.

> muh poverty line
Yeah but for a single person it's a lot lower you got have to understand that a lot of those estimates come from a three person to four person family.
i hear the homeless and panhandling have gotten more aggressive.
probably lots of muggings downtown now and homeless tent camps blocking my favorite views at santa monica pier or my favorite spots along malibu state beach.
not to mention the wildfires caused by homeless encampments (fires started to keep warm at night)
i don't know...
haven't been back in years and don't want to taint my memories of the place.
the only time i encountered homeless people were when i was downtown (around l.a. live)
i don't want to think about what's happened to santa monica.
I thought moving to like Southeast Los Angeles. Like Long Beach and areas like that. I've also thought of San Diego
i'd go with san diego, san diego seems unaffected by the hipster wave of gentrification. or better yet, any city in orange county (lots of hot women all over the oc).
I always thought on 70's santana during the socal heat even though I hate santana but I like his 70s stuff....
What is the real explanation with Los Angeles on their homeless I never got the full story but apparently they're fucking everywhere
the rent starting going up the wazoo in like 2014-2015.
same with san francisco and the bay area.
the rent hike (due to gentrification caused by heiresses and princesses from new york and europe, youtubers, and hipsters and edm producer wannabes from williamsburg) all moving there at the same time and bringing with them property developers and their high cost of living).
the homeless population wasn't as large as it is today, most of the homeless people are regular los angelinos who couldn't keep up on the rent so they live on the street or in there cars now
i remember los angeles (and even the bay area) didn't used to be the way it is now
in 2011-2013 a decent studio apartment could fetch you just $600.00, a one bedroom $800.00.
you could CHOOSE where you wanted to live in los angeles (except for maybe beverly hills, brentwood, and all those fancy places- although i did get an apartment offer by a nice mexican lady who was a landlord and had an apartment in beverly hills that i didn't look into).
i CHOSE to live in santa monica because i wanted to live near the beach, and it was in my price range and pretty much everyone else's
i wouldn't have much of an option if i moved back
probably get pushed out to riverside or long beach if those areas aren't gentrified already
I've been in LA for close to a year now. There's times where it's really satisfying to be in such a weird, vibrant place, but they're always followed by days where I really fucking hate it here. I don't know if this is just the deal with any major city in the US, but by and large the people here are fucking ridiculous. No common sense, completely untethered from reality. There's pockets of people here and there that avoid the rule: the ones who've just moved in from rougher areas and those who've had their backs broken from living here for so long.
Mostly I just miss the cold and snow, but I'll probably end up staying in LA for bit longer for a relationship. After that, I'm getting the hell out.
they are everywhere but the worst of the worst are corralled into skid row and that place is one big social experiment on the failure of society but they're all homeless anti-social assholes if you've ever walked around skid row. I knew a white dude that used to pull out a 12 gauge double barrel on blacks and the lapd didn't care because he was a vigilante and he croaked from fentanyl/benzos. I never asked but i'm sure he killed a few people.
go there and get it out of your system user, don't listen to this board. Everyone in the US shits on LA but there's a reason why like 70 mil people wanna live there.
I'm just telling him it's not that great and a lot of people come here and make the mistake of finding out that they really don't like it. I think people see Los Angeles from what they see on TV and expected to be like that all the time. But really this place is kind of awful and I would say even worse than New York
new york isn't bad if you get into a nice life routine (find a small group of friends and stick to places/things you enjoy outside of work)
plus new york doesn't have that homeless "failed western city" feel that los angeles has
Yeah don't go to LA and expect it to be like it is on TV. The thing mentioned about the cost of living and the poverty line here is true. Unless you have a job that's paying upwards to that we're over you're going to be pretty fucked here financially.

Long Beach user here.
I agree with most people here. LA's a shithole. Would not want to be here if I wasn't born here.

Just going to weigh in with some others here. I was born and raised in northern CA but have visited LA twice and its indeed garbage. This was 2012, for reference. 0 desire to go back. But I know that a bunch of us spergs writing you on Yea Forums isn’t going to change your mentality overnight.
The user who cited $50k as the nation poverty line wasn’t considering households, I think the nation’s household AVERAGE income is $55k. Like most anons here I don’t have a family to feed or kids to worry about. I don’t have a dream gig and there’s not a ton up here in north CA but I live by myself in a 2 bedroom apartment and still save about $1,500 a month after bills and rent. I’d still love to move to the PNW someday but for now I’m a lot happier having to drive a bit for shows and weekend city trips. Sure beats sweating each month to live in a hammock in your dream city.
Get somewhere financially stable for your age if you’re not already there and at least save a bit to make the move possible if you absolutely insist. I’m looking at transferring NW once I have some more experience under my belt for my resume, but until then I have no problem saving while also traveling and affording things within a generous comfort zone.
