okay, this is epic
rap is not music.
ok whitey
Cause it's boring cultural music that rarely does anything creatively worthwhile. Same reason shit like reggae isn't deeply considered.
actually pseudo-intellectuals LOVE rap music, and they make up all kinds of big brained excuses for why they need to rely on sampling talented artist's music, vapid consumeristic lyrics, animalistic hedonism etc.
Because intellectuals hate rap music, so the pseudo-intellectuals follow.
>rap
>music

rap is boring shit
You can't spell crap without rap though
some rap is good
I'm definitely not a pseudo-intellectual but I dislike rap music because it's so lyrically focused and lyrics are one of the least important things in music. I don't hate vocals, in fact good vocals can be great, but often I don't find that rappers are rapping for the vocal addition to the music and instead are doing it for the lyrical addition.
>it's so lyrically focused and lyrics are one of the least important things in music.
But that's the thing of rap, it's focused in something that no other genre does, lyrics.
>hate
No
>not prefer it
Yes
>implying it's the lyrics themselves, not the rhythmic aspects of the vocals that are the focus in rap
lmao are you retarded
uh, folk.
this thread is strong user. i like all of it.
rap is great.
t. Intellectual
i dont think contemporary rap has the same focus on the lyrical aspect as it used to have when it was just sample-based beats and social commentary lyrics.
the funny thing is that while it being more popular of a genre nowadays, its far from what rap was in the beginning of days. and yet people are defending this day and age with examples from a far past.
>rap is dead
>next on the menu
>more rap
This. Big time.
The advent of disco (circa 1974) and then rap (circa 1980) represented a retrograde (backward) evolutionary step for modern music.
For disco, it was more the music than the vocals. Since people really wanted to dance to popular music rather than just sit still and listen to it, someone decided to simply give the public an irresistible, steady beat with a few dumb words sung over top of it. A backward step.
Rap? Yelling, not SINGING over a backing track. Logic would dictate that rap would've come FIRST. And then someone -- probably a white person -- said, "Hey! I know! Instead of yelling shit, why don't we actually construct melodies and SING the words?" And a black guy probably said, "Nah! Dat shit ain't gonna work!"
Ok well if that's what the focus of rap is then artists need to drop the lyrics and instead just use vocal samples or something. Like this:

The reason I say this is because most all rap music I've heard has such 'in your face' lyrics that you can't really ignore. It's easy for me to ignore lyrics if they aren't garbage and it's easy for me to enjoy lyrics if they aren't about something retarded. Rap artists usually either write garbage lyrics or they write lyrics that are about shit that I don't fucking care to hear about.
and that's why I don't like it. It's a genre that is focused on one of the least important things in music, like I said before.
A person who likes rap music fundamentally does not like other forms of music. They may pretend to, they will appear as if they do, but if you put them in a car and give them Bluetooth, they will always play rap.
Actually true.
I tried liking rap, I really did. I like some instrumental hip hop like J Dilla. Beats are cool, but I usually can't bear the actual rapping.
Because they've heard a few mainstream rap songs and assume that all rap music is like that.
Same here
Only thing worse than a rapper is an MC
Yup.
I don't hate rap, but I do think a majority of it isn't very good. Similar to country or metal it's a genre where the style is so distinctive, it often overshadows the creativity. My biggest issue with rap is the musicality of it or lack thereof. You got your beat, you got your simples and done. But hey, there's good music in every genre, it just requires digging.
I 'hate' rap music because the lyrics are almost invariably nihilistic and/or hedonistic and explore few themes other than fucking, money, murder, or "whitey bad"
agree but not based lol
