This was written in 1972? His argument here is that after the counterculture wound down, white music became ossified. Yet I would also argue black music followed a similar pattern and gradually reverted back to simplistic party-down tunes by mid-decade.

White guilt is so sad, in all likelihood his ancestors never owned slaves.

Would it be remotely possible to have an in person conversation with Christgau about the mechanics of music like harmony, arrangement, melodies, counterpoint, and chord progressions or would he get flustered and immediately retreat into white male guilt moralizing

I'm guessing from the web page that this article was written in 1995.

He would go into a rant that anyone who can actually play or compose music is fascist and only New York Dolls and Pavement constitute artistic expression.

Black music never existed in a vacuum, it absorbed a lot of white (particularly Scots-Irish) music traditions.

Implying some prog rock 70s group (just as an example) owes everything to Chuck Berry or Little Richard is like implying every black electric blues guitarist owed Les Paul since he commercialized one of the first solid body electric guitars. Black people would never have arrived at prog on their own

I'm with him on U2 at least. There's creating a unique sound and then there's making every single one of your songs sound the same. I can honestly say after going through several of their albums that I don't remember a single one except for "I CAN'T LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE WITH OR WITHOUUUUUUUUUUUUUT YOU"

I think he said U2 didn't sound "punk" enough despite their pretensions, they owed more to the melodramatic AOR/prog rock sound of the 70s.

Seconds is their best song imo.

You're describing the act of reading a note sheet of the music. There's no need to have a discussion with anyone about that. Just read the sheets and say if it sounds good.

And it took a while to "get" hip-hop.

Christgau represents everything wrong with Boomer music. A self-hating worship of blacks above sense or reason, and a dislike of anything that goes past three chords in rock.

Christgau also referred to Shonen Knife as "three lookee-no-touchee geishas" but I guess racism toward asians is fine
