it ain't on spotify so i'm illegally downloading it right now. im gonna marathon the whole album for the first time. wish me luck bros.
Michael Jenkins
It's called Ys because it's as drawn-out, melodramatic and wanky as prog-rock band Yes, but not actually as good.
Elijah Roberts
based album-binger
Noah Brooks
Supposedly it's about 4 events that happened in the same year and greatly affected Newsom's life. Each track is about one event in particular except Only Skin which I think is supposed to tie the four events together.
That's just what I've read. This is what I got from listening to the album myself and analysing the lyrics
>Emily is about her relationship with her sister
>Monkey & Bear appears to be some extended metaphor about prostitution and/or an abusive, controlling relationship
>Sawdust & Diamonds is about her love for her harp (notably the only song on the album that's just harp and voice)
>Only Skin is almost incomprehensible but there seems to be scattered themes of motherhood for some reason
>Cosmia I believe is about the death of one of her friends
Jacob Richardson
If you dislike her voice at first listen, keep going. You'll love it later on.
Sebastian Reed
>love of her harp
wholesome
John Rodriguez
haven't listened to this yet, i hear it is prog folk, anything like harmonium?
Kayden Wright
lady with cute old lady/baby voice sings cool folk songs with orchestra behind her and it's beautiful
Zachary Turner
It's really good. It may take a couple of listens to sink in because it doesn't have traditional pop song structures, but that also gives it incredible relistenability
Xavier Reyes
i just marathoned and binged the whole album.
it's good.
Jack Phillips
neat. Eventually you may want to check out the Live at Bottletree bootleg. It has a performance of the entire album but with different arrangements

>Emily is about her relationship with her sister
Indeed and Emily is an astrophysicist so she deliberately does the meteroid/meteorite/meteor thing wrong as a little inside joke/tease :3
Brody Ward
It's about life and love and it's the only album that can make this jaded metalhead tear up
Joshua Morgan
Joanna Newsom - Live at Bottletree, Birmingham, AL (2006) [V0]
>Bootleg from Joanna's Ys tour. She plays the album in its entirety, among other songs, with the backing arrangments played on various folk instruments by her touring band. I think if the studio cuts had these versions of the arrangements then Ys would probably be the greatest folk album of all time.

Here's a really great interview where she goes in depth about it:
thewire.co.uk
About the album cover:
>And I had scenes I wanted to talk aobut - one of which was an idea of decadence, but also one of decay, like a little room with flowers everywhere, and bugs crawling over the flowers, and a skull, and poppies in the hair, which is like an opiated drugged reference, and the wheat which is fertility - there's all these references to physicality and death, and excess. And all contained in this very airless space - and the posture's extremely stiff, implying a corseted or breathless sense - hot summer air... There's also the sickle in the hand which is another reference to wheat but also a reference to a line in the song
Jackson Gomez
The meadowlark and the chim-choo-ree and the sparrow
Set to the sky in a flying spree, for the sport of the pharaoh
Little while later the Pharisees dragged a comb through the meadow
Do you remember what they called up to you and me, in our window?
There is a rusty light on the pines tonight
Sun pouring wine, lord, or marrow
Down into the bones of the birches
And the spires of the churches
Jutting out from the shadows
The yoke, and the axe, and the old smokestacks and the bale and the barrow
And everything sloped like it was dragged from a rope
In the mouth of the south below
We've seen those mountains kneeling, felten and grey
We thought our very hearts would up and melt away
From that snow in the nighttime
Just going
And going
And the stirring of wind chimes
In the morning
In the morning
Helps me find my way back in
From the place where I have been
And, Emily - I saw you last night by the river
I dreamed you were skipping little stones across the surface of the water
Frowning at the angle where they were lost, and slipped under forever
In a mud-cloud, mica-spangled, like the sky'd been breathing on a mirror
Anyhow - I sat by your side, by the water
You taught me the names of the stars overhead that I wrote down in my ledger
Though all I knew of the rote universe were those Pleiades loosed in December
I promised you I'd set them to verse so I'd always remember
That the meteorite is a source of the light
And the meteor's just what we see
And the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee
And the meteorite’s just what causes the light
And the meteor’s how it’s perceived
And the meteoroid’s a bone thrown from the void
That lies quiet and offering to thee

Based retard
Owen Reyes
Well, it tells different stories. There’s one about her sister, one about a manipulative monkey that tricks a bear to do everything he doesn’t want to (basically a metaphor for a toxic relationship), other one is about her dead friend (but using comparisons with moths) and another one is most likely about a man returning from war (the song is also about his wife)
Those are Emily, Monkey & Bear, Cosmia and Only Skin
What is Sawdust & Diamonds about?

Nah, I love the music/song structures on the record but her voice remains an obstacle to fully enjoying it.

miscarriage
Jeremiah Mitchell
>this genius is married to no talent hurr dick joke comedy music jew
Josiah Scott
I think Sawdust and Diamonds is about the baby she miscarried (there is a reference to this aswell in Emily, the lines "row through the night time so healthy gone healthy all of a sudden in search of a midwife who can help me" is possibly a reference to how women who suffer miscarriages often feel "better" physically after it's happened; I personally always thought Emily was about how her relationship with her sister was damaged after all the family drama related to the miscarriage, and how she wanted to restore their relationship).
Some moments in Sawdust and Diamonds also strike me as being clearly about miscarriage, first about how she has trouble dealing with the pain of her loss and then eventually with the acceptance of the futily of it all (the line about it all being like a sand castle that the gibbering wave takes) and hopes of being better ( "so enough of this terror we deserve to know light and grow evermore lighter and lighter")
Angel Nelson
did she actually have a miscarriage? can't find anything about it on the internet
Matthew Johnson
She has referenced it in Baby Birch, possibly Sawdust & Diamonds, and Emily. She stays out of the media though, so you find any stories on it.
Jason Peterson
