Even if it were true that social signalling was the sole motivator for pop music composition in youth culture (it certainly plays a part, but to imply that it's the only reason is ludicrous) this would br irrelevant to your claim that it's a substitute for "intellectual and spiritual development". Pop music is the soundtrack to a fashion scene and a way to pick up girls who are into that particular scene.

He's probably trying to imply by means of saying that since social signalling is the primary motivator in composing pop music, that it leads to an impediment of development amongst youth since they substitute self-discovery and self-improvement with said signals.
However, I agree with you and the guy calling him out for pseud shit. It's ridiculous to claim that music received by an individual induces ONLY this effect. To also claim that music can't aid in intellectual and spiritual development is also idiotic - the statement in itself is self-contradictory. Sure, music can be used for nefarious purposes such as advert jingles and propaganda, but to claim that its impossible of encouraging either intellectual or spiritual development just because its music in the postmodern world?
