A point to make though is anti war, anti establishment and similar themes aren’t inherently left wing or right wing, but anti authoritarian. Metal I would say is largely anti authoritarian. That’s why so many hipsters and tourists throw a fit when a band doesn’t believe what they think a metal band or person should believe

I might be one of the more laid back people, not very angry. But I remember listening to Raining Blood when I was like 10 and just thought "this can get heavier right?" And it did. It taps into emotions I don't really get a chance to acknowledge often. I'm pleb as fuck, I love Acacia Strain to no end. And that's barely even metal.

the average person who doesn't have an unhealthy obsession with music like we do listens to music to reflect/relieve emotions

most people i know that arnt into music claim "you are overthinking it" if you find deep meaning in a song. they just nod their heads along provided that the melody is catchy and the beat is solid. its hardly emotional at all to them it seems, just background noise for whatever task they are performing.

and in most cases, they associate tone with the emotion, rather than subject matter of lyrics. for instance, they could listen to a major key song about suicide and think its positive and happy, but an rough punk song about loving puppies would be "too angry".

its kind of like how the average movie-goer is unfamiliar with the tricks that filmmakers use to inform the audience of the deeper meaning - they dont even notice it, they just see the neato special effects and moviestars fighting with laserswords

exactly, it's entirely based on emotion. The reason why people listen to Jimmy Buffett on vacation or rowdy music at parties. to say people that listen exclusively to metal aren't overly angry is disingenuous

the problem with this is that not all metal is angry - energetic, yes. but angry? i dunno man, i dont find iron maiden "angry" - historically themed with operatic vocals yes, but angry, nope. Gojira's from mars to sirius is far from angry, its more of a scifi story than anything.

i feel like you can only arrive at the conclusion that "all metal is just angry and its listeners have anger issues" by excluding all the metal that contradicts the conclusion you set out to reach. in other words, you are discarding things that would contradict your claim in order to pretend you are right lol
