I'm not anti-rap by any means, but someone please explain to me what kind of grown adult can listen to a rainbow haired Mexican screaming >I'M ON SOME ROB A NIGGA SHIT, FUCK A NIGGA BITCH and come away from it thinking "I identify with that"?
I'll absolutely defend the right of rappers and record execs to make money off of their product, but it is a product that is aimed squarely and without any shadow of a doubt at the teenage demographic, and the fact that there is a huge population of adults who either don't realize this or don't care is mystifying to me.
I have no excuse. I'm 32 and completely degenerate. I only listen to it in private though
Levi Wilson
not sure what rainbow haired Mexican you are referring to but there are other types of rap more relatable >t. an adult
Adrian Myers
millennials are still living with their parents and unemployed/underemployed so they are in denial about their age. Listening to rap helps them feel like they're still kids
Zachary Green
very true insightful. really. not being an ass
Brayden Gomez
iffy nigga detected
Ethan Mitchell
It's just music lyrics man, entertainment. That's like saying metal fans identify with killing and raping babies and shit
Benjamin Lewis
I've only known a handful of metalheads in my life but they identified with the music they were into so heavily that it was creepy.
Mason Ward
Metal is another genre that is for teens and I like metal. Any genre that is #extreme is not something adults are supposed to be the primary consumers of. Punk is another one. "Adult contemporary" (AC) is what gets marketed towards people over 30 and it's stuff like John Mayer or Ed Sheeran i.e. artists with a more "normal" image.
Alexander Martinez
why anyone would care that pop music is aimed at teenagers is mystifying to me
Brody White
Literally blame toxic masculinity, a genuine phenomena that the internet has completely and totally run into the ground.
Joshua Nguyen
>adults >nigger music
Connor Cruz
Nah it’s not hurting anyone. Btw, have you ever just added random people on snapchat and found out they do hard drugs, listen to rap, and are like 16 17 years old? Its not even uncommon, to say its happens a lot would be an understatement, literally every other person posts snaps of them doing shit like that. Rap music celebrates degeneracy and ill will openly, and I GUARANTEE you anyone who listens to rap is statistically more likely to commit a crime and you cant even dispute this. Im not even antirap, in fact I actually rap myself, and I can tell you first hand this shit and you know its coming from someone who knows what theyre talking about. Modern rap is about being hard, its about your dispostion, being cool and arrogant, but it just so happens that everything about being cool and arrogant is what is causing western teenagers to degenerate into sex addled fiends and heavy drug users.
Easton Cook
I want to call toxic masculinity the gayest thing Ive ever heard but Im pretty sure thats what youre talking about
You gotta be drunk as hell but when you are it sounds good
Thomas Foster
That's partially what I'm talking about, but it's really an issue on both sides of the argument. Neofeminists and migtaos both like to twist the definition to suit their argument but toxic masculinity is a really simple concept: negative ideas about what it means to be a man. Think of the picture that rap music paints of what masculinity entails: killing your enemies, holding onto anger, using women. Now think of all the media we've grown up with that pushes that idea onto young men. When kids cant live up to what the media says they should be doing, it hurts them. They feel inferior. Thats the toxicity in toxic masculinity.
Robert Sullivan
I think you’re right in saying that toxic masculinity affects what men have to do to be considered men negatively, but youre wrong in thinking its social construct and not something innate. Men are that way naturally, we tear each other down and clamber on top of each other to be the one on top, you cant really blame that on the media. That’s an animalistic instinct. It’s the same way fertile females shun beta males, one could call that toxic femininity, but in reality it’s the sexual selection of a species at work! (Also if you haven’t noticed beta males are the victims in both instances of this toxicity but lets not get into that) Really a beautiful to think about, how we’re all just bald apes who’ve learned to speak.
Samuel Ross
And also when I say they shun beta males I mean they openly celebrate their own sexual value by specifically flaunting their ability to be out of someone’s league, from now on whenever you see a gang weed gamer post you will no longer see a bitchy girl but instead see an animal flaunting it’s sexual merit in a perpetual dickwaving peacock dance as old as history itself.
Aiden Thomas
Man do I unfortunately have a cousin going through this
Brandon Hernandez
Classical music is literal trash that only the most boring faggots in the world listen to.
Easton Lee
>you have to identify with lyrics to enjoy the music
Gabriel Murphy
yeah it's a youth culture, everone listening to this trash above 18 is pure cringe.
Cameron Hughes
Adults listen to Wu-Tang era hiphop not this new trash that doesn't rhyme.
Brayden Reed
Why do people think that if someone is an Adult they have to be a boring cunt? What do you want them to listen to? Paying taxes?sucking your boss'es cock for a raise? Alimony?
Just because you are insecure about how "mature" you are doesn't mean everyone is
Jackson Sanders
>rainbow haired Mexican screaming >>I'M ON SOME ROB A NIGGA SHIT, FUCK A NIGGA BITCH That's just one kind of Rapper, there are a lot of people who make mature Rap.
Personally, I listen to The Roots, Black Thoughts, Common, Nas(today he makes mature songs I can relate to, like "Daughters", one of my favorite song of his), Masta Ace(check his last album with Marco Polo btw, it's very good), etc...
Elijah Thompson
Pretty much all music is made by people younger than 30. Are you supposed to just stop listening to music you like entirely?
Jaxson Gutierrez
Take the country pill and leave childhood behind, lads
Easton Hill
You can't be this ignorant user. You damn well know thats theres plenty of rap thats not trap or gangsta.
Eli Johnson
Why shouldn't they? There are no objective rules on what you should and shouldn't be allowed to enjoy
David Ward
cringe, I bet you still play video games.
Cameron Price
>sacrifice the goats 666 slit my fucking wrists on a cross I hate god I eat fetuses demon demon demon destroy the sheeple
yeah bro keep telling that to yourself, your warlock cacodemon stuff is really better
Leo Williams
I don't really listen to metal anymore sorry kiddo.
Jack Brooks
These are actually great insights. Honestly, I blame modernism and cosumerism for fucking up the classical idea of what it meant to be a man. Not that there were never men that weren't ever complete beta faggots or insecure pompous folk over all of human history, but I think these two forces normalized this behavior to the point that it is a common phenomena compared to the more rare nature they once held.
Jaxon Nguyen
seething raptard
John Brown
those people are retarded. I say this as a 31 year old metal fan. I started listening to death/tech/grind at 14. I cut my hair the age of 24 and have stopped wearing all but like 3 of my band shirts. Ill still go to shows and stick out like a sore thumb cuz im the guy in the pit wearing jcrew and sperrys.
Ethan Cox
YEAAAAAA IM GONNA TAKE MAH HORSE TO THA OLD TOWN ROAD
Nathaniel Campbell
i see adults listening to rock and indie and feel the same way
Kevin Fisher
i too am a hick hop artist
Xavier Nguyen
AAAAAAAH YOU DONT HAVE TO RELATE TO THE LYRICS TO ENJOY THE MUSIC?? WHAT THE FUCK, HOW RETARDED ARE YOU?? IF WEEN SINGS ABOUT MOLLUSKS AND FISH I DO NOT NEED TO BE A MARINE BIOLOGIST TO ENJOY THE MUSIC
OP, IF YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUMS ISNT CALLED "IM A FUCKING TROGLODYTE" AND THE LYRICS ARENT ABOUT BEING A SMOOTHBRAINED PUSSY BITCH, I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM BECAUSE YOU WOULDNT BE ABLE TO RELATE TO IT
THIS ARGUMENT IS SO FUCKING STUPID AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Wow, I definitely didn't expect this much actual discussion. Some good insights and plenty of idiocy as well. Some responses:
At least you admit your degeneracy. That's the first step and puts you ahead of most of your peers.
These are the most insightful comments in the thread. Thank you for sharing!
lol Who said anything about classical music? What does your comment have to do with anything in this thread? Do you think that it's a dichotomy and everybody who hates rap loves classical and vice versa? You just outed yourself as a tasteless imbecile completely unprovoked. :)
>Why do people think that if someone is an Adult they have to be a boring cunt? So are you implying that rap is the only music that isn't boring or that anybody who doesn't listen to rap is a boring cunt? Also, what do you have against paying your taxes and trying to advance your career? It would seem that you have a very negative view on what you perceive adulthood to be. This is exactly the kind of personality I had in mind when I created the thread last night. I would be very interested to hear your age, demographic, and personal history.
This thread is about much more than relating to rap lyrics - it is about "rap culture" in general: the dress, the vernacular, the guns, the drugs, the womanizing, the idea that melody and harmony are unnecessary and all you need is a fire beat and some lit bars - all of which seems to have been adopted by a huge subset of the population that should have outgrown it many many years ago.
I've never listened to The Mollusk before, but as far as I know there is not a globally pervasive subculture surrounding The Mollusk with grown men dressing and speaking and acting with a nautical theme in attempt to "live" the mollusk lifestyle like there is with the rap lifestyle, so your argument is too specific to be applicable.
