Basically, /r9k/ was created as the feels/greentext containment board.
And although /soc/ was around for a while before /r9k/, when all the feels stuff was getting crossboarded it meant that the Yea Forums soc and meetup threads got crossboarded to /soc/.

That and the persecution of tripfags and last fm/scrobble competitiveness died. The general interest in board continuity got lost as well as oc content threads. Honestly, i think it may just have been that it lost momentum as oldfags grew up and moved on. And there was a big void of content for a couple years while specific groups used to board to virally market and shit up the board with the same threads everyday that left newfags in the dark because the old board culture was hard to find under all the of that.
Like, there is still a shit ton of charts and info in the sticky. And i wonder how many folks have actually looked at any of it? Idk man.

That stuff was always here. It was ironic then and it is now.

No, the right-wing Stormfront/KKK/neo-Nazi guys felt invited because people here were comfortable with the n-word. i could have bad memory because i was really young back then, but when i started browsing Yea Forums i'd say 7-8 years ago i don't remember daily threads that just go "fuck trannies" and stuff like that. i remember actually mostly just being here for music while nowadays it seems like 90% its argueing about edgy shit. while most memes nowadays are not music related back then we had a huge (stupid) catalog of music related memes (ITAOTS, ANCO and that Yea Forumscore stuff). i remember hosting these album mosaic games and while it had edgy jokes they were as blatantly racist as nowadays. when you do such a thread nowadays its guaranteed there will be really awful stuff on there. but at the same time i was only starting to get into politics 2-3 years ago so maybe i just see stuff differently now.

I've been going on this shitty site for more than 10 years, at the start it was a great place to find new music, new anime, whatever.. Or I would always find some funny stuff. But now I go here and I get depressed, between the incels, the /pol/tards, ect..
